disable onboard soundcard?
Hello again people of the forum! I hope i am not overstaying my welcome with the questions but everyone has been really cool about offering advice. I am still trying to get my laptop up and running but am getting some noise/ crackling during playback and recording. i've done alot of troubleshooting, optimizing for performance and now i'm ready to give it another whirl. i'm using an m-audio profire610 as an audio interface. My question is should i disable or remove the onboard soundcard (which is total crap). if yes, do i just disable the driver? or remove it completely from the control panel>add/ remove program area. help!! thanks in advance. jeff ledge

You don't have to disable the soundcard. Setting Sonar to ASIO drivers and just not using the laptops soundcard should work. You may have to experiment with settings (buffer, latency etc.) till you get it to work properly.

I would simply disable the on board sound chip via X1. Just don't have it selected in preferences audio devices. I would also check the DPC latency using the DPC latency tool you can get off the internet free. Further make sure you have buffers set right for your system. Again its in preferences audio somewhere. Try WDM and ASIO and see which performs better. I hope something above will help. Also questions are what the forum is all about. Keep them coming.

I use M Audio Profire 610 also, I have no problems at all and I have my on board sound card disabled.

I'll throw in with those saying it's okay (and maybe even desirable) to leave onboard sound enabled - Just uncheck it in SONAR (if it even shows up there), and set it as the default device for Windows so the O/S doesn't get any ideas about using your audio interface for anything. This strategy has worked well for me across several platforms. And whatever issues I have encountered with my audio interface/drivers were never resolved by disabling onboard sound as a troubleshooting step.

I usually leave the onboard sound ON, simply because as long as you use ASIO it will not show up in Sonar, AND it gives all other applications a pipeline, minimizing the chance of interference... R

In most cases you probably don't need to disable it. I've had only one case where I absolutely had to disable my onboard sound in the bios to get my system to play well with a Presonus Firestudio Mobile. I was having crackling audio and the occasional BSOD. Disabling it in the Windows device manager didn't cut it. It was only when I disabled it in the bios that things would work ok. My situation may have been out of the norm but if you're having issues, I would definitely try that. As a rule of thumb I now always disable my onboard sound in the bios, just to be safe.

When you turn on your computer the bios check everything. You may see a press F2, DEL, or something to enter the bios. Sometimes laptops don't let you into the bios. In the bios there are settings that tell your computer hardware how to operate. Think of it as the interface between the hardware and the OS. I hope I'm helping here.
