distorting vocals and volume problems in mixing

First, I get some great vocals going, the singer hits some hard vocals, I get distortion. What shouldI do? Second, how can i give the singer more volume in the headphones without the music signal changing on the recording level. if i bring the vocals up,the recording level start pegging., i just wont to be able to change the volumes in the headphones without changing the level on the recording. they have a hard time hearing them selves on occasion. And when I listen back to tall tracks, sounds great and good mix, I send all to one track to export to a file for cd burning, the lead guitar or some other instrument is way too low. HELP lol

You must be monitoring through sonar, if you can monitor directly through your hardware.
you could set the output of the track you want to monitor to a bus and use that to adjust the volume that will only effect the output signal.
as for your mixing problem make sure you are mixing down from a master bus, if you haven't already check out the mixing tutorial it will give you some basic ideas as to what might be going on.

What audio interface or sound card are you using? What operating system? Which version of SONAR Home Studio?

I am selling my MIM Fender Stratocaster HSS, red and black. PM for more details.

Music Creator 2003, MC Pro 24, SONAR Home Studio 6 XL, SONAR  X3e, CbB, Focusrite Saffire, not enough space.
    Everything is better with pie.

I ran into this same problem the other night. Turns out my Preamp was turned up a bit. I turned it down and that fixed the problem, good thing those vocals weren't keepers. I should have known better when I saw the vocal channel peeking. The reason I turned it up in the first place was because the singer couldn't hear himself. Next time I'm going to use this chain

To capture vocal performance = Mic > Preamp > Multi-Channel Mixer  > Audio Interface

Vocal monitoring configuration = Headphones > head phone amp > Multi-Channel Mixer > Audio Interface

This way i can turn up the vocals on the mixers dedicated vocal channel while leaving the overall song performance at reasonable level on it's dedicated main mix channel

Right now i'm using the $30 ART Tube MP Studio Mic Preamp. I'd like to get something a bit nicer down the line. My headphone amp is a $50 Live Wire Solutions HA04 4-Channel Headphone Amplifier. Haven't really had a need to upgrade this unit yet.
