distortion when recording (sample included)

Cakewalk MC 2003.
I have never had this problem before -- I replaced the motherboard in my computer, had to reset the input/output settings, and now I get this clicking sound on everything I record:

Stuff that was already recorded sounds fine in playback. My setup is: instrument/amp -> mic (in front of amp) -> pre-amp -> CPU. I've been using this setup, and Cakewalk MC 2003, for years, and I can't figure out this problem.

Wow...talk about having to jump through some hoops to hear the sample..... next time try sound click dot com.

OK... it sounds like static.  You did not mention the sound card you are using. Would it happen to be a factory or gamer type card?

I can get my system to click and pop too when I overload the processor. The factory soundcards will hit the overload level really early.

If you have a factory card, I suggest you consider an upgrade to a dedicated audio/midi interface.

When you do some upgrades in the computer, you change stuff and that will affect how the DAW runs.... in addition, the MC3 DAW is pretty old now.... what OS are you running, since the OS will also affect the operation of MC3.

edit: since you spent the money to upgrade the computer...why not upgrade the software to MC5? It's a good investment....just get the boxed version.

You may have to change the Buffers In Playback Queue and/or the Buffer Size. You can also try moving the Latency slider a little to the slow side; if it's set too fast, that could introduce pops, clicks and other distortion, or cause the audio to drop out.

heh, sorry... I have Windows XP, sound card is M Audio Delta AP Multi. I don't really know what that is, or even where I got it, like I said this is all pretty old but it worked for so long I figured why fix what ain't broke. :P

I will definitely look around for MC5, probably get it at Amazon as Staples isn't stocking MC anymore. And it's only $37, can't argue with the price.

    re: buffers in playback

That was the first thing I tried, but I was just toying with it...  I will try it again with your suggestions.

If you updated your motherboard, re-installed everything else, maybe you forgot to go to the M-Audio web site and get the latest updates for the Delta? Get the latest drivers for your system; they should have good ASIO drivers.

I get distortion, pops, crackles, buzzes stutters and sometimes an echo if I use any other driver other than Asio with MC4.

I'm a month late, but I just wanted to say thanks for all the help!

I got MC5 and the ASIO driver, everything worked great. MC5 took some getting used to, but the basic stuff was pretty much the same. I haven't tried the graphic EQ yet...because I can't find it, but I haven't really looked yet ;)

Anyway I ran into a new problem but I'll post a new thread about that, if I can't find an older thread about it.
