do modern desktops still need a surge surpresser or UPS?

the motherboard and power supply I'm getting for my new desktop appears to be new technology with a lot of features.  Do these already have a built in surge and battery back-up eliminating the need for a surge or UPS unit?  Does Windows7 have an auto power-off feature if the power fails?

No. There are no new features in desktop motherboards or power supplies that replace the functions of a UPS.

Maybe you could provide some info about your new system.

every system should have a GOOD inline (line active) UPS a cheap surge protector is nearly usless.

if you have a 700w power supply plus LCD and other gear you need to ad the total watts up and buy one thats that size.
dirty power, power brownouts are very common vs an actual surge.

power condidtioners (Furman etc) are not UPS's. furman does have a few that are.. not cheap.

Tripp lite is what i recommend.
