do you guys use any version control programs to manage and secure your work?

Just thought about it when i saw thread about loosing some work because of the crash.
Some folks suggested using save-as instead of save immediately came to my mind why don't use source
control programs (aka Revision Control aka Source Control). U use them at work for software development but it can be use for any files management. One of the popular is http://tortoisesvn.tigris.org/
It's something like save as and much more.

I've often thought about doing just that myself.  Something like "Subversion" with the Windows Shell extensions via Tortoise SVN (http://tortoisesvn.net/screenshots.html) could work really well.

The ability to be able to go to different versions of the same file (song) as well as be able to see clearly within Windows Explorer which files have changed would be great for the studio, just as it is for software development versions & backup.
I guess you could use an online tool too for cloud-based storage (such as JungleDisk) but the files tend to get pretty large so this would be expensive.  Still, I feel it's a matter of time before we start having backups like this for most of what we do.

I work for a game developer and for media we use Alienbrain. It's an excellent version control system for all sorts of files, including all of our Sonar projects.

Our coders like/use subversion, but even with Tortoise, it is light-years behind Alienbrain in terms of user-friendliness.  I won't beat around the bush, I hate Tortoise/subversion and all the various other front ends I've tried. I actually preferred the WinCVS front end to CVS version control software over Tortoise/subversion.  Subversion has lots of features geared toward developers and running builds that needlessly complicate things for us simple media users.

Alienbrain is really the simplest, once it's set up.

    Hey Steve

Alienbrain looks really nice, and the fact that it is geared towards multimedia (rather than just source code) files is probably a big plus.  Unless I'm mistaken it looks a little pricey (several hundred dollars?) for the average home user though.  Tortoise SVN is free, but I agree it might not be the best tool for this particular job, although it could be used generically across your entire system (i.e. no media files as well) quite nicely.

I'd love to see Alienbrain in action -- maybe I'll try their evaluation version.  It's a less pressing need for me as I do a good job with backing up files on external, off-site disks, as well as keeping a catalog of renamed files etc., and I use ViceVersa Pro as part of that effort, which is works well enough for me for this and the rest of my other non-studio systems.  Still, I have to believe that there are more applicable tools for the studio, and Alienbrain definitely looks promising -- thanks for sharing!

I didn't read the evaluation license in full since it's really long, but the evaluation license is fully functional for up to two users. It almost looks like a home user could evaluate it perpetually without violating the agreement.
