drum map patterns...

I was trying to figure out how drum mapping worked and had a question for ya'll. With all the drum maps that come pre-loaded, is there a way to audition these maps before you paint brush them in? How do you know what kind of pattern is beeing played otherwise? I went thru turorial9 in sonar, but it just told you what to put in, and how to route it for outputs and such. That was a big help, but I would like to know what the pattern sounds like before I drop it in.

Thanks everyone.

Drum maps are not patterns nor are they drum kits. They are for assigning notes and I/O for drum devices.

However, Brush Patterns are drum beats (sort of).
And I don't believe that there is a way to hear them before you use them. But all you have to do is delete it and try another.

as stated drum maps are just that.. giving names.. to keys e.g.. instead of key 36 / c0 ... you'd get it named.. kick / bass drum

and when you have the step sequencer.. well give the stuff meaningful names.. as well as the prv.

if your referring to say session drummer 2.. you can trigger the pattern on / off.. the lower octave keys will do that for the pattens... they just switch the patten on / off..

if you were specific what your using might help... but well your either triggerring a pattern on/off OR a single hit.

I hope this feature gap is filled in finally in the next release. Not being able to preview the brush patterns renders the feature useless to me.

Till then, the OP can purchase EZ Player Pro which allows you to preview individual kit pieces in any midi groove and then drag and drop the pieces that you want into your project.

With all due respect the end goal "should" be (I'm going to get in trouble with that) is to get to the point where you hear the pattern simply by looking at it.

If you knuckle down and study it "today" by the end of the week it will seem perfectly natural. Or, you can put it off, like I did, for years, maybe decades. :-)

I think the day you start simply using the pencil tool to write drum parts in PRV AND work towards making the track feel lively and appropriate is the day you realize just how cool the whole "sequencer" concept really is. A sequencer can be a window that allows deep understanding of the structure of a song.

    Anyways, I'm babbling.

    all the best,
    mike

yes, I would definitely love to be able to hear the brush patterns before I brush them into a project. I was hoping I woudln't have to purchase anything more to do this. But I guess it is what it is.

Drums are the hardest thing for me to put into a project cuz if I don't have a loop that works great, I don't know enough about drum maps or step sequencing to constuct a realistic drum pattern. Have got a guitat part recorded that I would love to put some good drums to, but I am stuck on how to go about it. sigh. I guess now the fun starts.

Thanks again guys for all your help.

    Sonar is still cool!!!
