dumb question about cut & paste

Whenever I've tried to cut (audio or midi) track data, for instance to pick out a good clip from the track and paste it to another track, my cursor seems to be stuck on some kind of "shift" function. That is, it wants to slide everything, not grab it. I know there must be a setting somewhere to change that, but I can't find it.

CJ- where do I select snap to grid?

cemas- for (too) many years I used cakewalk only for midi. I ran a very old version, and left clicking on track data would highlight it, letting you move mouse as far to the right as you wanted, to "grab" as much as you wanted. But with sonar 4, there's some kind of "shadow box" (don't know how else to describe it) which seems to prevent me from grabbing data, only moving all of it forward or backward. I imagine this can be changed, but I don't know where.

Ghola, just for clarity, are you trying to slice out a section of audio from a measure and then move it to another audio track? Or copy and paste it so that it's repeated?

To position an audio clip on a bar, or on a division of bar (half/quarter/eighth etc) you need snap-to-grid enabled, if however you want to place the clip anywhere without restriction, turn off snap-to-grid.

james- either or. It sounds like snap to grid is what I need to set. Where do I find that option?

In your track view, it's the little box with a grid on it (surprise, surprise ) right next to the magnifying glass and right above your panning control for track one.

Click on the left of the box to turn on or off, click the down arrow to see the options.
