Why do we need to hear about this from a third party?  I haven't had any message from eBay about it.  I seem to get my invoices promptly...

... just changed it!  I've been using the same password since 1999 (not exaggerating) so, it's probably time to change.

But my password is that symbol Prince used to use when he was the artist formerly known as Prince. I have a special custom key made on all my keyboards that will type it. What should I do????

If I heard the report right, it happened months ago... they are just getting around to telling us. I could be wrong but I think that is what they said.

I hate it, now I have to change some others too... then I promptly forget them.

Ya, this world is so hack-free not. But glad I am not on e-bay I suppose. Good luck to the ones that are on e-bay.

Just heard from some friends that they're now being redirected to change their passwords and that a few couldn't get on to eBay because the servers were too busy changing passwords!

I just got on to check my listing and didn't get any redirection...  Maybe after I log off for the day I'll get it tomorrow?

Yeah, the report I saw said that it was in February, so I would have thought that any damage that's going to happen would have been done by now anyway. I think with all of these things it is only ever a matter of time before it's compromised, which is why I don't use them. I have bought a thing or two that was advertised on ebay, but I collected them myself and paid the seller at that time. Online banking ? No thanks. People really need to wake up to what they are doing when putting personal information online however "secure" it's claimed to be.

I used to be of the same opinion, but I couldn't work without online banking now. The only time I go near the bank is to pay money in. In fact I do almost everything online now, pay bills, income tax, car insurance, road tax..hardly ever write cheques or post letters these days.

Same here. I also depepnd a lot (if not all) on online banking and with all this hacking going around, you're almost forced to pay for added security.

That's all well and good and I sincerely hope it doesn't come back and bite you one day, but the day will come when the banks will close all the branches citing that there is no need for them any more as "everyone" does their banking online these days. The result of that is that they will save loads of money that you can bet your life won't be passed on to the customer in any way and your only point of contact to the people who have your money will be a website. I think people really need to think about what they are setting themselves up for. There's only one reason that all the banks are pushing this and it isn't for the cutomers benefit. Yeah, it's convenient .....for now....

I am currently 3 months into having lost count of how many times of asking my energy supplier to answer a simple question via the www and I'm still no closer - and don't even get me started on their phone system ! These are my only choices and in 3 months neither of them have brought an answer.

Most times I go into the bank, a cashier will remind me that I "can do that online now". I always point out that once everybody does that they won't have a job any more. Sometimes you can actually hear the penny drop. ;)

Re: eBay hacked - change your password ASAP 2014/05/22 12:27:57 (permalink)
I hear you Paulo.

It's a matter of necessity rather than convenience for me, being in a rural location and doing the kind of work I do means that I'm nowhere near a computer during the working day (unless I come home for lunch), so to be able to log-in and move money from my business account to the current account (for example) at 7:30am is a real plus for me, there's no way I could get to the bank to do that, nor would I have time to phone them and go through the endless security rigmarole.

Likewise I can get home in the evening and check if a customer has paid me by BACS, then use that to pay bills in my own time.

Of course, if the power or broadband goes down..I'm screwed...

What you describe has pretty much come to pass anyway, the cashiers and even the manager, in my local branch have very little control over my transactions any more, and I've noticed that happening gradually over the last 10 years. They're really just drones with little or no decision making power.

I can tell you that financial institutions generally take security far more seriously than most other companies.

Part of the problem for most companies is management and even technical administrators often don't understand the threats, take security seriously and are unwilling to spend time and resources on it.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

That's only fair since we rarely take management seriously.

Maybe they do, but seing as they've pretty much proven that much of the trust the general public placed in them was in fact largely misplaced, I won't be taking the chance. As I said in my later post, it's not the only reason I resist.

Hope your power supplier isn't SSE then - you could be waiting a long time for a response. I know what you mean about the dwindling lack of authority at branch level - I've seen that in action too.

Keep in mind, it's not so much our money that they're worried about protecting.

Exactly. You can bet your life that if the bank vault contained 50% our money and 50% theirs and someone got in and robbed half of the money that it would turn out that unfortunately for us it was our half that got stolen. ;)
