What I'm hoping that I'm getting is a replacement to several hardware synths I have now. Is that the case?

What josh said. Think of it as you would a workstation keyboard, only much more massive in the sound-library department.

Also, am I confined to 16 channels of multi-timbrality for the entire library?
If I buy another soft synth/sampler do they share channels or does each instance have its own set of 16 channels?
Finally, will it take a lost of processing power to run multiple instances?

Each instance allows (up to) 16 channels of MIDI mult-itimbrality. But you can have multiple instances, limited only by resources. For a given set of sounds, I don't see any significant hit having multiple instances playing that set of sounds, over a single instance playing the whole set. It appears that the base overhead for each instance is pretty low. The new 2.5 set allows for bussing of FX, which might save you a little CPU. My personal preference leans much more to using multiple instances, as it's cleaner for me to route the MIDI and audio around.

What other soft synths/samplers would you recommend at or around the $200-$500 range?

If you already have S7, then definitely look into the DimensionPro offer going on (for the next 2 days).

Hi,
I am trying to decide whether to join the group buy. I am convinced about the Sonik Synth sounds. The demo sounds are really great. Can anyone comment on the acoustic/electric guitar sounds that are available as part of the group buy?
Appreciate your feedback.

Thanks
Chander

Hi Chandler,,,, there's a ton of them,,, and they are quite good. There are quite a few in SS2, plus you get the Guitar Expansion Tank and Sonik Capsule sounds. There are different models with different articulations. Sampletank doesn't have an amp simulator built in, but if you have one,,, you can have a lot of fun running them though that.

I always sound like a keyboard player playing a guitar, to a guitar player, but when I play them, a lot of people who arent musicians, wonder who the second guitar player is.... lol.

I don't think any sampled guitar sounds will fool a real guitarist,,, but every one I've played these for agree that they sound pretty good.

In the end I decided to go for the Gladiator synth from tone2.com
It sounds awesome and I think the older sonik synth sounds will not be able to compete with it. But to each his own.

Hope you enjoy it, higain.

Harmonygardens,

I joined the group buy (293) and put you down as the reference. I also posted these questions in a similar thread but this one seems to be getting more activity:

Thanks for the referral!

1 Yes. With a massive library, as losguy pointed out.

2 Yes,,, but you do have the option of another instance,,, most hardware synths be the same way, but you have to go buy another one to get another instance.

3 Well, it would not share the same channels with other softsynths, unless you wanted them to. This is set up by your routing in your host. If you want to, you can run them in tandem with another softsynth, by setting up two tracks, routing the input of both tracks to your controller and the output to the respective softsynth (and channel) and linking them through the input echo. You can also set up to 16 sounds on one channel in Sampeltank, which gives you very complex sounds.

4 It depends. Sampletank isn't really hard on your resources, but if you put a lot of sounds and effects into it,,, it will obviously use some resources. In a studio context, you have the option of freezing an instance.

I have a four keyboard set up, and have been prepairing for playing live. I've found it useful to set up a track templet in Sonar and Project 5 that has a track for each keyboard, that is routed to a channel in Sampletank. I can create combinations in Sampletank that puts the voices I want to play on each keyboard in Sampletank, and save them. This way, if I want to use a different voice set up, I can simply load a different combination, and all my sounds are where I want them. I can load a combination in a couple seconds, instead of reloading the host for each song. This way, I can set up my songs at different points in the timeline, and find things quickly. It's working well, for me.

5 Kontakt, Wusikstation, Dimension Pro,,, this could be a long list

Hope you enjoy it!! I really do.

You can still purchase the group buy. It won't appear as joining; it will just be a purchase. The group-buy has momentum and while we can't keep it going forever we are at least letting it go through the end of the day (here in Florida so 5 pm Eastern Time) on Monday.

Here is the link to join:
http://www.esoundz.com/details.php?ProductID=1768

Feel free to use me as a referral (altima_boy_2001) and we both get $5 in ePointz.

13 zip files for a total 3.77 GB (5.6 GB extracted). Only took about 42 minutes on my connection...

Last call on this one folks. It's at 396 now. If 4 more people join, everyone gets and extra $20 worth of epointz, to use on on their next esoundz purchase. The GB closes at 5 pm EST, Dec 3.

Here's what you currently get for $199:

Sonik Synth 2 -- with over 5,000 patches of quality sampled instruments, including the largest collection of sampled vintage keyboards anywhere.

The brand new Sampletank 2.5 engine. This will load all SS2 samples and play them with all the new Sampletank 2.5 features and effects, including the new Classik Studio Reverb and 30+ more premium FX.

100 new custom Combi's each for SS2 and ST2.5.

$20 worth of ePointz

6 Expansion Tank discs (described below) in Sampletank format--which formerly sold for $99 each.

6 Sonic Capsule discs (also $99 each) in UNIVERSAL format for Sampletank, Kontakt, Battery and NNXT.

This is an incredible deal. There is something here for everyone, and at full price of $1,500.00, this is well worth every penny of the $199 buy in.

Expansion Tanks
OmniSynth GM - 134 instruments, 255 patches
Guitars - 10 acoustic instruments, 35 patches, 40 electric instruments, 177 patches
Acoustic Drums - 34 instruments, 60 patches
Bass Collection - 119 instruments, 296 patches
Piano Collection - 21 instruments, 95 patches
Ensemble Strings - 42 instruments, 102 patches

Sonic Capsules
Bass - 93 instruments, 261 patches,
Acoustic Guitar - 62 instruments, 98 patches

They also give you and a person who you use as a referral $5 worth of epointz. tell 'em harmonygardens sent you.

If it hits 400, everyone will get an additional $20 worth of epointz. That means you'll get $45 off your next purchase, and that could be applied on something like a crossgrade to Amplitube 2, or CSR, or Philharmonik, or anything else that might appeal to you on the eSoundz site.

RE: eSoundz Sonik Synth 2 Group Buy 2007/12/02 18:05:58 (permalink)
Well, I don't have Sonic Synth or SampleTank yet, but a couple of the download Capsules include Battery programs/kits (Studio Drums, Eclectic Drums, Grooves). I got them installed and played around with them and must say I'm liking them a lot. Nothing fancy overall, but they just seem to fit in with guitar and bass sounds I record.

The Capsules install Battery 1 kits, but I have Battery 3. When I load the kit it claims the sample files can't be found. Click the "search system" button and if the samples were installed somewhere in the default Battery 3 library folder it will find them all pretty quick. Just re-save the kit as a Battery 3 kit and you won't have that problem with that kit in the future.

There's currently a known problem with the UFO programs that comes with the downloadable Capsules for installing - they will fail to work completelyunless run from a CD/DVD. The workaround is to unzip each capsule and burn each to a CD or burn all the capsules to 1 DVD. Then install them each from there. Note: the autorun.inf and UFO executable should be in the top-level directory (root directory) of the CD/DVD. If you burn all to a DVD then only 1 autorun.inf file will be on the DVD - not a problem, just click on each UFO_xx.exe to install the Capsule. If you ordered the custom DVD this will probably not be a problem for you. More discussion can be found in the KVR forum links in this thread.

The UFO programs will install the programs/kits, convert the samples to either AIFF or WAV format (whichever you choose), and update the programs/kits to reference the correct files.

Sweet 401 now
