Give us some more info about the computer.... and what is the new operating system? Generally, you want to install the program from the administrator authority level.

I agree with Herb, It sounds like you currently don't have permissions to remove the previous install. Try it again as admin. -TAP-

It could also be a non compatable operating system like Mac or linux.

O.K. I see you are running Vista. File permissions are a function of your disk configuration. Is your Drive FAT32 or NTFS ? Either way ... I think you will need to change the File or Folder permissions ... These appear on Files and Folders under properties on the Security Tab. -TAP-

To run a program as an admin, you need to find the program under the programs folder and right click and hit run as administrator.

you need to either create an admin account in vista, or run the SETUP program from the DVD as ADMIN (using the method they described above) the reason is because cakewalk requires only admin to install and register the program is to prevent unauthorized users from using it.

In Vista you log in as administrator.... install the program...and run it the first time as admin. You access the run as admin by right clicking on the icon and it's in the list in the window that opens. when you run a program from this position, and install the key.... you should not have to do it again. write down the name of the file that's causing the error and get in touch with cake's support via email. send them the info.... they're slow...maybe a few days, but they should be able to help.... if we can't. Post it here too.... there are a few IT people here.

It sounds like it's trying to remove the original install, but for some reason don't have the permissions. First of all, you need to know what folders or files it's trying to remove that it doesn't have the permissions to remove. Next, you will need to either change those permissions so that you can remove them, or change your current status to one that can remove them. ie. admin. - TAP -

Did you previously install MC on the new computer and are trying to re-install it? I don't understand the "error ocurred while trying to replace the existing file" (sic) thing. It must be trying to replace something with MC 4. What is that thing?

Actually, I think i had the same problem when I went to install MC4 on my new laptop. I think it wants to replace a file but the file that it's trying to remove is newer and protected. I believe I also got a prompt at this point and I just choose to continue and everything installed O.K. .... Not sure if this is the same problem you are experiencing. -TAP-
