ever heard of "sfz+ "?

hi all,
I am tinkering with lmms and got the wind there is a free VST plugin named sfz+ available at this here cakewalk.com
now I look around and can only see glossy pics and prices transcending my imagination abilities .
Is there any hope to track down that sfz+ or it was an outdated link?

Here's a link. http://www.cakewalk.com/Products/sfz/

The plugin Sfz+ is a sound font player which now belongs to Cakewalk (it was developed by rgc:audio) and you can ask Customer service if they'll put a download link into your account. There were a number of free plugins like that we could download but that was years ago.

There is a difference between 'Sfz' files and Sfz+ sound font player.

Sfz files are better explained here. There are also a variety of free Sfz editors online.

I've checked my records, and while SFZ+ was free it required a unique serial number so unfortunately I can't just make a copy available to you. Something I had hoped I could do.

Best hope is still to make a request to customer support.

If you need a soundfont player try TX16Wx http://www.tx16wx.com/

Its free and considerably more modern than SFZ+ and can also sample and use many other formats.

Intel i7 3770K @4.4GHz, 32GB RAM, 240GB SSD System disk, 2 x 2TB and 1 x 1TB (with SSD Cache) HDD. Windows 10,  Sonar Platinum. Roland Quad Capture.

I had downloaded in August. But forgot the link. Its sfz101.zip containing 2 files:
sfz+101.exe
sfz+DXi101.exe

SFZ+ was a ray of sunshine when it first came out, but bugs and ironic limitation plagued it. Half baked and stuck in time.

It could not open sfz files in spite of the name. You had to go to the free sfz player if you followed the lineage.

The attack on vibrato is broken, nail in the coffin if you are trying to do steel guitar swells. They knew about the bug but no budget or whatever to fix.

Just a dinosaur. Glyn gave reference to a good and more contemporary player.

Good alternative dinosaur for sf2 that has all the bells and whistles is Jeskola. Paid a hundred bucks for this in it's prime. Now it is free.

Technological limitation is that it cannot deal with wav samples over 16 bit resolution. Otherwise, a much better alternative to SFZ+. Has all the features and overall a better machine. Such a loss that these guys didn't develop further.

Wow! when looking for a dinosaur I found a sympathizing crowd of good guys!
thank you!
now, the link to sfz loops back to the paid version (their right);
the link to jeskola is dead (we all'll go there sometime);
tx16wx made my mouth water but it dried up when I saw it's not for linux.
Complete setback? No!
thank you guys it's nice to share the time and space with people like you.

Hmm...

Try the Jeskola link again. It downloaded fine for me just now. It's a zip file with the single dll.

I really liked the sfz.exe which plays sfz text-and-wav files - NOT sf2 (soundfont) files.
Compact, seriously powerful.

It has problems when more than one instance is running. They trample on each other's memory which brings down Sonar.

I now use DimPro as a .sfz file player - huge overkill. sfz.exe was so much simpler and quicker to edit.

I use lmms , carla is supposed to be  a part of it but I couldn't ever  make it work, yet sf2 plugin (for fluid fonts) works OK.

Guys,

Apologize for trying to direct Sehrguey off the Linus track...

Vegetable level opinion on sf2 or sfz players. Most of you are way passed beyond even dealing with this medium.

Technology is so far outdated compared to something like Kontakt libraries. Main reason for the downfall is the lack of dynamics other than velocity sensitivity, and maybe frequency response if you have the ears of a bat. SF2 even more dead and decaying than sfz.

However, there are some great sf2/sfz banks out there, some free and some for sale. If you don't mind the fact that light pressure sounds the same as banging with a hammer, some good stuff to be had.

Not for emotive solo passages, but if sf2 is filling in an ear splitting tirade, dynamics are a lost cause and still has very useful place. Across the spectrum, some of the Rhodes EP's are incredible. Remarkable GM sets are out there for the taking, and in my opinion, relevant in the here and now.

Tx16 is cool, but still haven't figured it out yet. Main problem is how to load multitimbral fonts, as in a violin on channel one, a brass section on channel 2. Maybe can't do. Cool feature otherwise is the “border” function that allows fixed width samples, like the Mellotron, to be extended beyond the original design up or down.

Loaded Jeskola free and it works well in win 7 at least. Only does sf2 and wav below 24 bit.

My ancient under the radar player is SampleLord, which loads more formats and has the same simplicity and power of Jeskola, and intent of the flawed Cake sfz+. Fire it up and get 'er done. End result is the rapid and efficient loading of samples across midi channels. Getting the required end point without requiring an engineering degree to figure out how to do it.

www.samplelord.com

Forgive my simple mind, but this is a monster application. Downside is it probably still costs something. IMHO you cannot do much better.

SF2 and Szf are still cool in the right hands, and understanding how to apply.

John

couple notes…

Rev Terry West did a cloak of Cake's sfz player that added some enhanced features and controls. Not listed on the download page anymore, but might be available if you email him. Check out the other plugs, mostly compressors, eq,free stuff he has done.

Best,
John
