external soundcard creative sb x-fi + sonar 8 producer edition
hello hope someone can help me. I have an Acer laptop and because I had a weak soundcard on board, I bought an external sound card Creative SB X-fi. I also bought Sonar 8 producer edition. Now, I get no sound in Sonar, altough I get a signal when I press a key. If I play an mp3 I have normal sound. In the midi-options I selected my keyboard with my Edirol UM-1X (keyboard = Yamaha AN1X). So in & out is Edirol Um-1x. In audio options I selected my external soundcard. It drives me al little crazy because I don't find the problem. Hope someone can gif me the solution! Thanks Dave

creative soundcards aren't the best for recording. you would have been better off buying a USB soundcard designed for recording. after you installed the drivers for the SB card, did you run the wave profiler in sonar 8? if not, you have to do that before sonar will recognize you have a new soundcard to use.

No still no sound. I also downloaded Asio4all as I saw on other website. Still the same result... I get a signal in Sonar, but no sound! Hope you have other suggestions... thanks

No still no sound? you mean after you ran the wave profiler? sorry, but you weren't clear with your answer. if you can't get it to work with the correct latest drivers from creative in either WDM or ASIO mode and you can't get it to work with ASIO4ALL then I'm not sure what else to try except return it and get a better soundcard - unless someone else ahs a better idea. I have recommendations for reliable soudncards for recording on my website.

Sorry for the unclear answer... I can't run the wave profiler. I couldn't find it in the audio settings. On the internet I find that this option is not available in asio4all. Do you have an idea how I can run the wave profiler? So I ment I had no sound with Asio4all.

ok. that's different. SB cards don't always work in ASIO mode, and I don't know if ASIO4ALL will work if you've never run the wave profiler in WDM mode because ASIO4ALL is actually a WDM wrapper. OPTIONS>AUDIO change back to WDM driver mode and click OK then go back there and click on the WAVE PROFILER button at the bottom of that window. it will run a series of tests. make sure the SB card is connected to USB and is recognized by windows before you open sonar to do this.

Ok... I ran the wave profiler. Still no sound. I still get the signal, but no sound. One thing that changed: when I now press a key , the volume line doesn't go up anymore.

One thing is unclear to me: What is the sound you expect to hear? Are you operating with a MIDI-controller only? If so, have you inserted a soft synth - you don't mention you have ? Have you read the manual properly and done the tutorials? SONAR 8 isn't a plug'n'play thing. There's 1500 pages of info on your DVD. MIDI is just control data, so there must be something to produce the sound.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

that's a good point Kalle, I didn't even think about the fact that he might be talking about MIDI only project.

Sorry for the late answer, different timezone (Belgium here). Well I have the Edirol UM-1ex usb midi interface. This is on one side connected with my keyboard (Yamaha An 1x) and on the other side with the laptop. Then I have the external soundcard Creative SB X-fi, connected with the laptop and with headphones. On my normal slow computer (not laptop), I made music with Sonar 8 & my Edirol UM-1ex connection. Normally the computer gives a singal true my Edirol to my laptop & from the laptop true the external soundcard so I get sound out of Sonar. Do I see this wrong? thanks Dave

On my external soundcard I inserted headphones like I said, there is also optical out lighted up (red light). Do I have to buy a optical cable to get the sound or can't this be the problem. I thought that I would get sound true the headphones like said above. Maybe you can get somewere with this info.

no, you don't have to use the optical output, but you do have to make sure you're not sending the output TO that port because you're not using it. what EXACTLY is listed for the RECORDING and PLAYBACK DEVICES in OPTIONS>AUDIO? What is selected and what other options are available in the drop down lists?

In the advanced section I can choose in "record latency adjustment" between: - USB Soundblaster HD (1in, 1out) --> selected - High definition audio device (1in, 3out) in the driver options section I have the same options as above.

latency shouldn't have anything to do with you not being able to hear anything. - basics: start a new project. click on the AUDIO track (it should load an audio track and a MIDI track for the normal template. make SURE you click on the AUDIO track for this and not the MIDI track). click on FILE>IMPORT>AUDIO browse and find an mp3 you know will play on windows media player let it import that mp3 into the track now hit play. can you hear anything? if so, next step: set your INPUT on the MIDI track to your UM-1X. insert TTS-1 as a softsynth options: NO MIDI SOURCE TRACK FIRST SYNTH OUTPUT NOTHING ELSE needs to be checked (If I remember correctly) TTS-1 does not need to show up in your screen. if it does - it's not a big deal, just get it out of the way you don't need to set anything ON TTS-1. on the MIDI track set the CHANNEL to 1, BANK to PREDEFINED SOUNDS (first one), PATCH to ACOUSTIC GUITAR STEEL (19) make sure your OUTPUT on the MIDI track shows TTS-1 and NOT the UM-1X (that's what it would default to if you have that checked as a valid MIDI output in your preferences). change it to TTS-1 1 now play somehting on your keyboard. do you hear an acoustic guitar sound?

Ok I followed your steps and loaded an MP3 in Sonar. When I play it, I see the master volume playing & also the volume in the audio file is moving but still no sound!

ok - one last thing to check and then I would suggest you send the SB card back as defective if this doesn't work. just by chance that windows is derailing you (which it does me occassionally with my firewire soundcard). is this win7? click on the speaker icon in the systray. click on the link at the bottom of the one that is labelled USB Codec or something similar (you probably have more than one option). now make sure that the properties of the soundcard are showing your MAIN output 1/2 or whatever SB calls it and NOT the SPDIF or anything else on the SB card.
