ezdrummer a softsynth?

Hiya again...
  still more drum questions....
Okay, right now we use the Cakewalk tts softsynth to have our drums trigger the general midi drum sounds through it.  (did I describe that backwards?!)  Is EZDrummer and other software of this type a softsynth like TTS?  would we drop it in like the TTS, or is is a vsti?  and if it is a vsti, does it work the same way?  what I am getting at:  I want the easy control of simply plugging in the drums (like we do now), and having a track devoted to the drums, showing the midi notes as they are played while recording.  But, I want the great sounding kits of ezdrummer, as well as the "randomizing" hits to make it sound more like a real kit...make sense?

Yes it is a softsynth, as far as function. The sounds are sample based, but it responds to your input just as any soft synth.
I use it mostly with the Alesis DM6 drums as input, to which it responds rather nicely.
It has plenty of included rhythm patterns, but you don't have to use them.
Your input and/or MIDI track are what dictates what it plays.
On a side note, I got a hold of some Zildjian anti-vibe sticks. They are designed for e-drums, and have a rubber core. it may sound gimmicky, but they do feel much better with the rubber heads, such as the DM6 and Simmons sets have.

I have several synth drum apps and yes, they are all soft synths.

Insert them into the FX bin of an audio track and link a midi source track to them.  or pop them in as insert soft synth and the connections are made automatically. then use a midi controller to "play" the drums.

Jamstix works a bit different, but it is still a softsynth. It has it's own internal midi source track where it records what it plays.... or creates for you. You still have the option to link it to a different midi source track if you desire...

    Hey, thanx, guys.
we have just done mesh heads and triggers on a real kit, and it plays wonderfully, like a real kit.  It's just the "sounds" from the TTS that are not exactly what we are looking for.  I am going to buy ezdrummer (when the price drops again, I missed the sale at GC by a day!)

LOL. Yeah, I almost missed it. I got there with a few hours to spare.
You might want to try Session Drummer 2, if you haven't already got it.
At $10, it's a steal, and also responds nicely to the the e-drums. I tend to prefer the SD2 hi-hat. It has a much cleaner open hat sound than EZD.
At the moment, I run both at the same time, with the high hat going to SD2, and the rest of the drums generally going to EZD.
EZD has a noticeably better snare, but the SD2 snare isn't bad.
Toms and kick can go either way, depending on the sound you are after.
    And SD2 has a cowbell.

Softsynth is a name give to software synthisizers. VSTi is a VST Instrument, DXi is a DX instrument. Both VSTi's  and DXi's are softsynths. Both VSTi's and DXi's can be either samplers or occilator based synths as well. DX is a Microsoft technology based on DirectX code, and VST is a Steinberg based code called virtual studio technology, there are others, like MAS which is from Motu, and RTAS which is from digidesign or protools, but VST is the most popular, with Dx maybe second.
