faders work later in song - but not earlier -

I've got some tracks that are in at top of song, then come back later.  I happened to be where they re-enter, so I put the write and read enable on and started to use the faders in console view; and the faders worked (which sometimes they don't) - so then I went back thinking my read and write enable work; I go to the top, and the writing and reading of the track faders in console view now does not work - at the top; but they work later in the song.  Again, I started later in the song not at the top.  But why would they work later in the song and not earlier?  Do I have to turn something on, something off, what am I not getting?  Appreciate any insight.  Sorry to see Sonar go!  I think overall it's really great software.
