    Hi geah-

You can put a Volume (or Expression) envelope on a MIDI track and fade it just as you would on an Audio track, or you can Freeze or Bounce the synth and apply a fade exactly as you would on an Audio track!

thanks for the info. So I just right click and select envelopes - create track envelopes - volume? I tired that but it didn't work. What am I doing wrong?

If you're using a soft synth to drive the midi, then you can use the Audio track to fade in and out. You can use an envelope or Automation.

The most likely scenario is that your synth doesn't respond to MIDI volume (CC7). You can try with CC11 (expression, like Susan said): right click the volume envelope > assign envelope > MIDI... choose (or type) 11 in the value field. Again, it's not sure that your synth responds to that - the method Oaf_Topik described works always.
