fanless video card
Can anyone recommend a fanless video card with dual monitor support for an i7 system. I don't understand the terminology at the likes of newegg and tiger as far as dual monitors goes. thanks

most cards will support dual out these days, prob one vga port and one dvi. look at the nvidia n210 series or 8500 series or ati hd4350 series...

I don't understand the terminology at the likes of newegg and tiger as far as dual monitors goes. I have looked at a lot of specs on websites over the years and I must say I agree with you. A clear statement that the video card will support two monitors is as rare as hen's teeth these days. I think it is probably because, as mgh notes, most contemporary cards will support two monitors. Not so long ago, when you saw two sockets on the picture, you did not know if they were there for compatibility purposes, but could only feed one monitor at a time. Most cards now have a way to get different data out of both sockets, sometimes requiring an adapter. The websites tend to prominently mention only those features that they think are a selling point, and dual monitor support is not a distinguishing charateristic. Sometimes there are more complete specs on the manufacturer's website, but even there the specs are as much about selling as informing.

Works great, is fairly cheap and silent.

Thanks guys. Hey David. That looks great. I'll check it out. Would you mind sharing your detailed new build specs (down to the thermal paste:)? I haven't seen you around here so I suspect you haven't been around cause your system works. Thanks.

timidi Thanks guys. Hey David. That looks great. I'll check it out. Would you mind sharing your detailed new build specs (down to the thermal paste:)? I haven't seen you around here so I suspect you haven't been around cause your system works. Thanks. I built a new Intel Core i5 DAW to replace my quickly aging Intel P4 DAW. I wanted a good powerful system but I also didn't want to spend a ton of money. The total cost of the computer (before new monitors, monitor mount and software) was around $800. Just over double that when you add in the two 23" Dell monitors, vertical monitor mount, upgrade to Sonar 8.5 PE (from 6 PE) and Windows 7 Professional. Computer... -Motherboard: Asus P7P55D-E -CPU: Intel Core i5-750 Lynnfield 2.66GHz -Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 1600 -Primary Drive (OS/apps): Kingston SSDNow V Series 64GB SATA II SSD -Data Drive (Cakewalk Projects): Western Digital Caviar Black 750GB SATA -Video Card: Sapphire 100236UL Radeon HD 3650 512MB Dual DVI -Power Supply: SeaSonic S12II 430B 430W 80 PLUS BRONZE -Case: Antec VSK-2000 Black ATX Mid Tower -add in mounting rails for the SSD and a cheap DVD burner

timidi Thanks David. That's very helpful. An SSD huh? Geez, now I gotta think about that:) Yeah, they are still fairly pricey but for me the price has come down enough to justify a large enough SSD for OS and apps. I have Win7 and Sonar fully installed along with EZDrummer (with two additional kits) and I still have about 25GB free. And yes, it's REALLY fast! The drum samples in EZDrummer load in just a few seconds now (compared to at least 15-20 seconds before depending on the kit). That makes a huge difference when bouncing in and out of projects. Also, Dimension Pro samples load nice and fast too. Windows 7 boots in about 20 seconds and when the desktop appears you can immediately launch apps with zero hesitation.

i take it EZdrummer forces you to put it's data where it wants to (on the C: drive)? don't own it.

16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit) http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/get/system-requirements.aspx I'm not seeing it use that much. I have W7 Pro 64bit installed and I think it's using (not counting page file) about 14GB. I don't have access to that computer right now to verify. But I know it's not 20GB. And of course, Sonar 8.5 is "supposed" to require 50GB but it's full install is way less than half that.

ATI 3400 with onboard ATI lets me run 3 monitors, but could run 2 with the ATI 3400 series. 1 dvi, 1 vga
