Noisy 700-R
Just out of curiosity, does the fan on your 700-R a little noisy? I was noticing it is a bit noisier than my Roland VS-2480. Is there something that can be done to quiet the fan a bit as I might be doing some recording near it and I would rather not have to deal with the noise.

The fan is on all the time but with mine it is so quiet it is bearly noticeable. It is one of the quietest things I have heard. Maybe rack mount it or put it in a rack cabinet etc that can be closed. Just keep away from it. I have recorded near it and it does not seem to come out on any recordings. Remember sound drops fairly quickly (-6db) as you double the distance from the source to the mike.

Hey John, The fan is audible but, for me, not enough for it to show up on vocal recordings. If it bugs you at all, rack mounting it will definltley reduce it by quite a lot.

I don't have a VS700 but can offer a couple of tips on reducing noise pickup in a mic that I have to use because of my environment. First is to use a cardioid or hypercardioid mic pattern. The second is to use one of the mic isolators things like the sE Electronics Reflexion filter. See http://www.seelectronics.com/rf.html Basically it acts like a portable partial vocal booth. One bit of advice if you do use this: it's a heavy piece and if put together and used in the normal fashion most mic stands WILL tip over. Either use 2 mic stands or assemble the thing so that the curved part is on the opposite side of the mic stand from the mic. You'd be amazed how sensitive some mics can be. Put a set of headphones on and just listen to what's in them with normal preamp settings for the mic - you'll hear all kinds of noises you will never hear with your naked ears. This is one time you don't want to use a ribbon mic (they're bidirectional).

Fartakis mousakis, and they told me it was a rare malady. I can barely hear mine. But my computer is a noise problem on the Mics I'm using. As well as the Air conditioning and that damn clock on the oven in the kitchen. And the ice machine in the refrigerator dumping a load right in the middle of a song. When I finally finish my CD's people everywhere will be responding to a subliminal message to put ice in their drink.

I just setup mine this weekend. I can hear it a room away. It's louder than my PC (which isn't as quiet as I would like). I'm very disapointed. I'm going to put it through the paces (which includes playing around with the Fantom synth) but I have suspect I will go back to my Fireface.

Hey guys, just wanted to respond to say that mine isn't making any problematic noise either. Maybe there's something wrong with the fans of your units? Best Regards Ludvig

Hey Ludvig, Where in relation to your ears is the VS-700R? Is it out on your desk on the table-top or is it racked up somewhere? Also, is it just a fan noise you hear or is there any unusual clicking or somehting like that?

Hey Seth, just wanted to state that I have absolutely no problem with the noise of the fan. The ones with noise problems include "RA1222" and "madfloyd". Thanks for chiming in anyway! Best Regards Ludvig

Seth, In my case, it's on my desk right in front of me (about two feet away). There isn't any unusual sounds (clicking or pops etc) but it does sound like a motor (fairly low pitch), not just a fan. Sort of like being in a quiet car. I haven't tried putting it in a rack just yet. For one thing, I don't have the space and two, I thought it would be helpful to have it in front of me to see the meters. Speaking of meters, I don't have any inputs hooked up yet (still working on installing soft synths etc), but the Output meters don't seem to work.
