Kevin - I really, really, really think you need to get a new hard drive for your computer. it really appears that your hard drive has become corrupt and the quicker you deal with it, the fewer headaches you will have. I hope you've backed up all of your data (especially your cakewalk projects) already!

I noticed it says usb 2.0. Im not even sure what that is. I know my computer just has regular usb. would I have to buy a plugin that plugs into my usb and coverts it to 2.0? If so what to those run?

2.0 usb is just the faster, newer format. The plugs are the same. Can't really answer the rest, I would just be guessing. I can say from experience that replacing the drive is very easy. There might be a way, if your tower has an empty slot, to put a new drive in, transfer the operating system and files internally, and the remove the old, defective drive. Later Albert

you can't use a USB drive for your OS drive. your computer should have come with at least a disc that would restore it back to original state - which has the OS on it, but it won't necessarily say "windows" on it.

Your computer should allow you to make 1 set of recovery disks, which can only be used on the computer that burned the set. On my computer, it's under Start>All Programs>PC Help and Tools>PC Recovery CD/DVD Creator. For me, it would have taken 12 CDs, or 3 DVDs, which is what I used. In case of a HD failure, you replace the HD and load the recovery disks.

Yeah that sounds like the trick. I agree with Beagle, you can not run an OS from an external drive.
