Transferred MIDI files/soft synth question...
I've transferred some MIDI files from HS2002 that were done on external hardware synth modules (Proteus 2000/DM5/Kurzweil/etc) and am trying to reassign them to the HS7XL soft synths. The problem is I can't seem to get 7XL to allow me to assign new synths to the tracks without opening new synth tracks and pasting the MIDI info into them. Needless to say, this is time consuming as Hell, especially considering that some of the files have 12 or more different MIDI tracks.
Is there a way to do this other than the way I'm doing it now? I've tried a search, read the Anderton & Garrigus books and checked the "help" files....to no avail.
Please respond as soon as possible. Thanks in advance!

If the tracks are using general MIDI sounds, all you have to do is add the TTS-1 to the synth rack and then CTRL-A to select all of the MIDI tracks, then select Tracks-Property-Output and select the TTS-1 as the output.

Naw, they weren't General MIDI but were patches in the various hardware synths, which I no longer have. I can't remember the last time I did anything in GM. The Proteus 2000 patches I can replicate via the E-Mu "6 pack" stuff I've got installed but want to change the rest of the sounds using the internal SHS7XL soft synths. As it stands now (like I said) I can only do this if I open a new track for each old one and copy/paste the MIDI info into the new track.

Well, you shouldn't have to copy the tracks. All you need to do is add the synths you want to the synth rack and set the output of each MIDI track to the softsynth you want. It could be you have some settings in those tracks, like patch or bank that's causing you to have to do that. If so, and what you're doing works, then that's what you'll have to do.

Thanks, Dave. I'm gonna fire up the studio at some point today (probably after football, of course) and do some experimenting with the problem. I can't imagine there isn't an easier and less cumbersome way of doing this than how it's being done now. I'll post later if and when I get it sussed out.

doni - first, when you say you can't assign new synths to the tracks, tell us exactly what you mean by that. have you INSERTED a softsynth? which one(s)? if you have softsynths inserted into the project, what happens when you click on the pull down menu for the "O" (output) of the MIDI track? give us more details about what you mean by you can't assign new synths to the tracks.

If you've imported a MIDI track into SONAR you can simply add an audio track that's associated with the MIDI track and right-click the FX bin of the Audio track to insert the softsynth of your choice (yes, the AUDIO track). Assign the MIDI output to the softsyth. Voila! That's all there is to it. If you have a multi-timbral MIDI file you may need to add additional audio tracks and make some adjustment to the MIDI data events, patches, etc., to get it to perform the way you want but that's just the way it is when you've written that information into a previously recorded MIDI track that doesn't conform to GM standards (which I frequently do! *LOL*)...
