New PC - sound issues with Sonar 6

My son and I just built our first computer (quad 3.4GHz, 4 GB RAM, Radeon 4870, 550W PS, WinXP 32 bit, etc) and I installed Sonar 6.  My old computer used an Audigy 2 soundcard and it worked great with Sonar.  I'm trying to use the integrated audio (Gigabite motherboard, Realtek HDA HDMI or HD Audio output) with no success.  The HDMI gives no sound, the HD Audio gives garbled sound.
 
Is there any way to use the integrated audio, or should I go back to the Audigy 2?  Or is there a better audio card that's under $100?

P.S.  In case anyone's wondering, it's an old (working) version of Windows XP SP3... I also bought a copy of Windows 7 64-bit but I'm waiting until next year to install it... it seems like a lot of programs right now (S6 included I believe) have issues with either W7 or 64 bit).

    M.G. the usual advice, if recording audio is to buy an e-mu 1212 or something similar.  However, if not recording audio but digital tracks like soft synths (which is what I do, exclusively) the Audigy is very good.  I'm using an xtreme music x-fi card (you can get these used for around $40) and like it very much.  The drivers are excellent with low latency.  I believe that audigy also has an asio driver, if not you can use asio4all.

    Two questions, M.G.
    Does the mobo have at least one free PCI slot? Not PCIe.
    Do you have an external mixer, or other preamps of some kind?
    If so, for $100, I would spring for either an M-Audio 2496 or E-MU0404(PCI).
    Both offer MIDI I/O, and 2 audio inputs. The M-audio uses RCA jacks, the E-MU, 1/4" phone jacks.
    Niether has preamps, but they do have good sound and solid ASIO drivers for low latency.
    I can't speak for W7 or 64 bit, but the E-MU has served me well under XP(SP3).
