Hey, how you doing? Welcome to the forum.
If you would, please, click the Options button at the top of the MC screen, then Audio and list what it shows for playback and recording timing masters and what drivers are listed and selected. What Driver Mode does it show?
Are you using a condenser mic and does the M-Audio have phantom power? Is the phantom power on?
Did you go to the M-Audio web site and download and install the latest updates for the interface?
Also, could you let us know what operating system you're using and how much RAM, etc. the computer has?
In the MC track you're recording on, what do you have selected for the input?
Are you trying to record audio on a MIDI track? Audio won't record on a MIDI track and MIDI won't record on an audio track. A MIDI track has an icon that looks like the end of a MIDI plug and an audio track has an icon that looks like 2 squiggly lines.
Sorry if some of these questions seem directed to a fifth-grader, but, well...
Anyway, if you can get us some more info we can probably help you get going.

Greg... I think you covered just about every base in that one post.......

good advice from Greg... go through every question in his post...line by line and check those things.

But Greg.... you forgot one question..... Is it plugged in and the power turned on?

And yeah... Welcome to the forums Normalguy....  you might be in strange company here...as not too many people here are what you would even loosely refer to as "normal"... and we're mostly proud of it too.

Ok, well i tried to insert a midi track as well, but the same thing happened. when i did this the mic input was omni. the output was going back to the quatro. when i tried on audio the input is left usb audio quattro and the output is master.

i check the audio options, and driver mode is wdm/ks. both the input and output are usb quattro audio. i am using a condenser mic (shure pg81) as well.

M Audio Quatro... looked it up...  4 audio in/out. When you hook it up, install the latest drivers, be sure they are vista compatible,  run the wave profiler, and open a project, the quatro should be in the audio input/output available list.... I also would think you would want to run ASIO drivers as well....

When you clcik on a track and track properties opens, you select the maudio input (I use left input) and point the track output to master...and the master output buss should point to the maudio usb interface.

Well I have it set up that way and nothing. the driver isnt vista compatible seeing as it was released in 02, so i run the program in windows xp combatibility mode. should i try another mode? also, if i switch it to asio drivers, it doesnt even recognize the usb interface. it only does on wdm/ks

M-Audio typically has good solid drives, did you go to their site and download the latest vista drivers?
