Metronome?? WHAT METRONOME???
This is perfectly ridiculous! I've been using the freebie version of SONAR (4.0 I think) that came with my E-MU 0404 Audio Interface for about six months. The audio metronome worked flawlessly. I grew to like the product although I still can't figure out how to add drums to a song. But I became familiar enough with it that I decided to spend the cash on SONAR 8 Producer. Now that I've3 spent all this $$$, the damn audio metronome doesn't work. It appears as if it's working. I can see signal in the output meters but I can't hear a damn thing out of the metronome. I've got it configured exactly the same as I did in version 4 Lite, but I can't hear it. I've waded through everything in the Help file regarding the metronome and have tried changing the settings to every conceivable combination, and have done the tutorial. Still....NOTHING!!!! I'm highly ticked. And of course, there is no such thing as a software refund. Can ANYONE help, or has anyone else encountered this problem and been able to solve it? I'm about to put the damn thing on eBay and go back to the freebie lite version. At least it works. Thanx in advance.

did you check and see how it's configured? are you trying to use the metronome with a MIDI source or audio? go to Options>Project>Metronome, and there you can choose Audio (at least that's what i use, so that i can hear it). also, if you are creating a new project, and you are using the default project template, it adds a Metronome bus. there is a volume fader there to move up to make it louder

Yes, all is and was configured as you said, and the level is nearly maxed in the metronome buss. I set the count-in to 2 measures, arm a track, hit record.....and I hear nothing. There is the 2 measure delay before the recording begins to advance but all is silent. Thank you for the reply though.

Hi The- Welcome to the forum! Along with what wetdentist suggested: If you're using the default "Normal" template, make sure the output from the Metronome bus (and the Master bus, for that matter) is going to to your Main Outs (i.e., your speakers), not to Phones or anything else. You might need to double-check your Options > Audio settings and verify that those are correct, too. HTH- -Susan

First off, thanks to all of you for the welcome and the replies. I really appreciate it. Its just that I can hear EVERYTHING except the metronome. For instance, I had recorded a 24 track song in the lite version 4 last week. So now I open it in Producer 8 and it sounds beautiful (to me at least ;-). I can add or delete tracks and record new ones the same as I did before, and when I open the metronome settings, they appear to have carried over exactly as I had them configured when I initially recorded the song. But still, I can hear EVERYTHING except the metronome. I can create a new file using the Normal template and configure the metronome as I always have. I can record track after track and I can hear every one, but still no metronome. The only way I can add a new track though is to start recording a measure or so in advance. I do agree, it has to be a config issue, but I'm at my wits end as to what it may be.

I like to use the Kick drum sound for the initial beat, and Closed Hat 1 for the rest. I just wish I could hear them.

And you've double-checked that the Metronome is enabled for Recording and/or Playback? And that those Kick Drum and Closed Hat 1 .wav files are in the correct folder? (If in doubt, go with the default Ping files as a quick test.) Sorry to ask the obvious! -Susan

You still have S4 LE installed, right? Does the metronome still work there? If not, check to see that grooveplayer.dll is in your Shared DXi folder. If you uninstalled S4, that might be the problem; uninstall might have taken the dll with it.

It depends on your OS and SONAR version. Here (XP 32-bit, S8.5 Producer Edition) it's "C:\Documents and Settings\<user name>\Application Data\Cakewalk\SONAR 8.5 Producer\Metronome". Re the pup -- thanks! -Susan

Hey brundlefly, thanx for the suggestion. I uninstalled S4 before installing version 8, but I just checked and grooveplayer.dll is there in the Shared DXi folder, along with its .chm Help file. I'm about to the point of doing a complete uninstall/reinstall. I don't know what else to do.

Could be onto something here Susan. In Vista/32, it would be C:\Users\User\AppData\Local\*** BUT....there is NO Cakewalk folder. Maybe that's the problem, although how that happened I have no idea. I think uninstall/reinstall may be the way to go at this point.

Dead metronome syndrome is rare but not unheard of. I know others have resorted to reinstall to cure it. Never had any problem with it myself in all theses years. I guess you're just one of the lucky ones. You might want to hold off and see if anyone comes up with more troubleshooting suggestions and/or Google metronome and grooveplayer related keywords with "site:forum.cakewalk.com" appended, which is the best way I've found to find relevant threads/posts quickly.

It appears as if it's working. I can see signal in the output meters but I can't hear a damn thing out of the metronome. Not sure what this means. What meters? the metronome buss? the main outs? the master buss? Where do you have the metronome routed to? What are your settings under options->Project-> Metronome? What audio driver mode are you using? Are you running Sonar as Administrator? Could be onto something here Susan. Just wanted let everyone know it is a non-issue at this point. When a simple reboot doesn't solve a PC problem (which it does probably 90% of the time) an uninstall/reinstall is usually my next logical step, and this case was no exception. Uninstalled/reinstalled the app and I've now got my metronome back. Thank you all very much for your help and suggestions, I really appreciate it. Yo wetdentist, have you gotten a handle on choosing a different tone for the audio metronome besides the dreaded "ping"? If not, here's how I do it. I compose Rush/DT type stuff with lots of time sig shifts and syncopation, so since I'm constantly using the metronome (and tempo) controls, I like to keep their toolbars readily available in the interface rather than having to go through the menu. Right-click an empty spot on the uppermost toolbar and then click "Toolbars..." from the pop-up and place a check beside "Metronome". Once the Metronome toolbar is visible, you can dock it anywhere you want. I have mine at the very bottom of the Track View window next to the large version of the Transport toolbar. Click the "Metronome Settings" button on the far right of the toolbar, which opens the Project Options dialog. If it doesn't open there by default, click the "Metronome" tab, and then under the "Audio Metronome" category, you can choose a sound from the dropdown boxes for your "First Beat:" and "Other Beats:", and also specify a volume differential. I find that the Kick drum is a nice option for the first beat. So...anyway...now all I gotta do is figure out the easiest way to add drums to a song. But don't worry, I will save that one for a separate post ;-) Just too happy with my prodigal metronome right now to worry about anything else. Re: What meters? the metronome buss? the main outs? the master buss? I was actually referring to the signal meters on my E-MU 0404 USB Audio Interface, which made the whole situation even more ludicrous. Thanks again, everyone.
