USB Midi cable problems!

Hi Troops - Hope everyone is well ??

I've recently sold my MOTU which was giving me major headaches and bought a M-Audio Fastrack which has been working like a dream until I went to record Midi.

Low and behold it had no Midi inputs - what ????? I probably shoulda opted for the Fastrack Pro or something. Anyway, to get to the point .....

I purchased a USB to Midi cable like this :-

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Keyboard-to-PC-USB-MIDI-Interface-Adapter-Cable-New_W0QQitemZ350305438333QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Computing_CablesConnectors_RL?hash=item518fd4ca7d

I'm trying to record some keyboards from my Yamaha which I'll ultimately hook up to Hypersonic BUT there is no signal coming into Sonar. I tried swapping the IN & OUTs around on the keyboard but to no avail.

I even sent the lead back (it did actually arrived cracked) and the same thing is happening with the replacement one.

I've tried all sorts of combinations for my Midi Outputs - Creative SoundFont Synth (I still have a SB Live installed on my machine), Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth and USB Audio Device but nothing happens - well except when I choose USB Audio Device it hangs my system and I have to reboot.

I've included a link to a Word Document with my screenshots showing the options I'm picking and still can't get anything. Can anyone help please?

I'd rather not download a file from an unknown source, so I haven't looked at your doc.

Are you seeing MIDI activity in the activity indicator that SONAR places in the system tray by default? If so, it's just a simple routing/cahannel assignment issue in the project setup.

If not, can you see and select the MIDI ports in Options > MIDI Devices? If so, have you verified that your keyboard is sending MIDI? Easy way to check this would be to disable Local Control on the keyboard (which you;ll want to do in any case), loop a MIDI cable from the keyboard's OUT back to its IN, and see if you can play its internal sounds that way, monitoring with headphones directly from the keyboard.

If the MIDI loopback test with the keyboard works, the dvices are showing up in SONAR, and you still see no activity in the system tray indicator, somethings' not right with the drivers, and you will need to talk to the manufacturer's support (if there is any ).

    Hi Brundlefly

Apologies, I thought by using a secure uploader like yousendit.com it might alleviate that issue, understand anyway !!

There is no input showing in the system tray. I even had another lead which I checked too and it lights up RED - the other lit up ORANGE.

I tried the loop test and it worked.

    Here's what I see ...

Sorry, I'm not understanding that. What lead, and what lights?

In any case, if you're trying to hear the sound module built in to the Yamaha, change your selected MIDI Output device to USB Audio Device, and change the MIDI track output to that in SONAR. You want the MIDI to come into SONAR and be echoed back out to the Yamaha. From what you;ve written, the Creative Soundfont thing should not be involved.

I looked at the picture of the unit from your EBay link.  I have a similar unit from MAudio (MidiSport Uno) which works fine.  However, I can't tell who the manufacturer is from the photo.  I would suspect that you don't have the drivers working correctly.  I would suggest you look at your devices through the Windows Device Manager and make sure the unit is functioning.

You have the wrong MIDI Output selected. It should be the USB Audio Device (which is a weird name for it). You're currently pointing it to the built-in synth on the SoundBlaster card. Select the USB Audio Device and then move that to the top of the list.

Dave, IF I select that output it brings my system to a grinding halt and I have to reboot.

    Hmm...

I might be understanding this wrong but...

Did you say you want to record from your keyboard (Yamaha) and output this from sonar to a soft synth (Hypersonic)?

In that case you have everything the wrong way around. In your MIDI track you have to set the track INPUT to the Yamaha and the OUTPUT to the soft synth. In your case you have to load the Hypersonic into the synth rack and set the output of the MIDI track to that soft synth.

To set the input MIDI device use Options->MIDI devices, and be sure your input device is checked.
The output from the soft synth should be set to your sound card (or better - use a stereo bus as master, set that one to your sound card and output the soft synth to the master bus).

You only have to set the output of a MIDI track to hardware if you are using a hardware synth module. As far as I understand this is not the case.

    Hi JClosed

    Yes that's right.

I have set the INPUT to USBAUDIODEVICE and the OUTPUT to Hypersonic 1 and still there is nothing coming in from the keyboard.

I have tried using my mouse and creating notes by hand and it works fine - it's just NOT reading ANYTHING from the keyboard and I've tried two leads.

Bugger this .... I'm OFF to buy the M Audio Fast Track Pro that HAS Midi inputs LOL

Before you run out and buy a Fast track pro you can check one thing. Go to your windows control panel, doubleclick on "Sound and audio devices" and coose the tab "Hardware". Now make sure you see an input device over there. If not close the window, doubleclick on "System" - choose tab "hardware" and click "Device manager". Make sure you do not have anything marked with a yellow singn.

At the other hand - the Fast track pro is a nice piece of gear

I read this so rapidly that maybe I missed it, but..

I didn't see you mentioning an audio track with input from Hypersonic, which would be necessary to hear audio. You did mention using Synth Rack which usually automatically creates an audio track, but anyways...
