Problems using V-S100 as a control surface
So far so good except in one way: I am having trouble using the V-S100 as a control surface for SONAR. I have SONAR 8.5, latest upgrade, and followed the installation guide to the letter (even to the point of installing SONAR VS, which I don't need, and which doesn't work any better). What I have right now is: an audio interface, midi interface, SD card recorder, but NOT a control surface. I live in Europe so I'm not eager to spend a lot of time with Cakewalk tech yet. Any pointers out there?

tkmmusician in sonar go to options/midi devices and make sure control (VS-100) is checked for input and output. then go to options/controllers/surfaces and click on the yellow + over to the right. under control service pick from the drop down menu VS-100. under input port pick from the drop down menu control (VS-100). under output port pick from the drop down menu control (VS-100). then close. can’t remember but you may have to restart sonar. good luck

Everything works fine for me (Sonar 8.3.1 and VS-100) and I did the following: 1. Installed VS-100 driver. 2. Out of VS Production Pack installed only "Control Surface" Choose it on the "Select Component" screen. Then, running Sonar 1st time: 1. Options|MIDI Devices... Check for Inputs: x MIDI (VS-100) x CONTROL (VS-100) Check for Outputs: -- DO NOT CHECK "Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth" -- x MIDI (VS-100) x CONTROL (VS-100) Click "Move Checked Devices to Top". Click -> OK. 2. Controllers/Surfaces -> MIDI Devices 3. MIDI Devices (same screen that was configured in #1) -> OK 4. Back to Controllers/Surfaces -> (Add button - with yellow little star) 5. Controller/Surface setting. Select: Controller/Surface: VS-100 Input Port : CONTROL (VS-100) Output Port : CONTROL (VS-100) 6. Back to Controllers/Surfaces -> Close 7. Options|Audio Options -> Advanced tab Payback and Recordiong section, select: Driver Mode : ASIO Click -> Apply After some time Advanced tab is back. Go to -> Drivers tab. a) Uncheck Adobe Default Windows Sound 1.5... in both "Input Drivers" and "Output Drivers" lists. Without unchecking it in "Output Drivers" list all VS-100 drivers are grayed out. b) Check in "Input Drivers": x VS-100 IN 1-2 x VS-100 IN 3-4 x VS-100 IN 5-6 x VS-100 DIGITAL x VS-100 MAIN x VS-100 IN 1-2 Check in "Output Drivers": x VS-100 OUT 1-2 x VS-100 OUT 3-4 x VS-100 OUT 5-6 Settings on "General" tab are: Playback Timing Master - 1: VS-100 OUT 1-2 Record Timing Master - 1: VS-100 IN 1-2 Click -> OK - Iaroslav

Your installation steps look OK. I asked earlier which version of Windows you were using. The reason I asked is that this does make a difference for the VS-100 control surface if you're running a 64-bit version. XP 64 bit does not support the control surface. Vista and Win 7 64-bit support it for Sonar 8.5.2 and later. In your first post, you said you're running '8.5 latest version' and in your second post you said Sonar 8.3.1. 8.3.1 does not support the control surface if you're running 64-bit Windows. One thing to check: After you setup the control surface and save it, go back to the Controllers/Surfaces window and make sure that the In and Out ports are still selected as 'Control (VS-100)'. This will tell you if Sonar is able to use the controller. When you save the controller settings, Sonar will load and intialize the control surface DLL. If some thing goes wrong, the In & Out ports will show as '--- None ---' when you come back in. Sonar does not give you any error messages when it can't use the control surface. I learned this the hard way when I tried to use Sonar 8.3 with the VS-100 under Win 7 64-bit.

PROBLEM SOLVED Unter Controllers/Surfaces, I hadn't correctly configured the VS-100. First, I deleted my previous configuration. Then: I selected "VS-100" from the dropdown list (I had left it on "ACT/MIDI Controller"). This had confused me because even when "ACT/MIDI Controller" was selected it still allowed me the choice of "MIDI" and "CONTROL" for input and output as if it were the VS-100. All is well with the world now. :-)

I'm a little confused and would like some clarification. Why would you install the Sonar VS if you already have the latest version of Sonar? Was it just for the plug-in? Thanks
