DLL/OCX Failed Msg Sonar 8.5
Hey guys i noticed using "search" this topic came up a few times in the past months, but none of them resolve. Been using Vista 64 with Sonar32 8.3.1 just fine. This morning tried updating to 8.5.1 and got this error msg right towards the end of installation: "Unable to register DLL/OCX: regsvr32 failed exit code 0x3" Then it proceeds to list off a few dll's such as vs700.dll, cwtuner.dll ,etc So what's going on here?

Error 3 means "path not found". It's because the DLL or OCX is missing, or a dependency is missing. Most likely, the setup program was unable to write one of the files. This can be caused by having a file in use (which is why they tell you to close all programs before installing), or insufficient Windows permissions (which is why you should always install as Administrator). Reboot, close everything, log in as Administrator and re-install SONAR.

Brand new setup actually, Vista 64. Just had 8.3.1 running on it flawlessly for about 2 weeks or so.

May be if I uninstall 8.3.1 then try a clean install right from 8.5?

May be if I uninstall 8.3.1 then try a clean install right from 8.5? Unfortunately, that's not an option unless you ordered the full set of disks. You'd just have to re-install 8.3, because the 8.5 download is just an update, not a complete release. Most installation programs open a log file that can be used post-mortem to diagnose setup problems. However, I have not been able to locate any such file for the 8.5 install. I'd suggest opening a support ticket with CW. In the meantime, can you repeat the setup and get a screenshot of the error message to post here?

Hey, I tried last night to install the 8.5 release. I ran as administrator and had everything closed but continue to get the same error. The problem is all you can do is abort, ignore or ....can't remember last option...but none of them sove the problem. Help !

Pardon me for reviving an old thread. But this "unique" problem with installation is something I battled with. And since there are no other threads shedding light on it, I figured I would mention how I solved this problem. My Sonar 8.5 was in the form of an upgrade. So I had to make sure my Sonar 8 was installed. Well, I like to have both 32-bit and 64-bit version on my pc. But in this case I had only installed the 32-bit version so that I could installed both versions of 8.5. I kept getting the "vs700.dll" errors when installing 8.5 64-bit. I finally realized I needed to install 8.0 64-bit before I could successfully install 8.5 64-bit. It worked afater several headaches. Cakewalk needs to put more thought into their installers. I als ran into an earlier problem of installing Sonar without a program executable. I usually choose custom install and choose AUDIO PLUGINS. I didn't notice that it only installs plugins and not the program!! Yes a stupid mistake on my part. But you would think the installer would notice that not a single Cakewalk program was installed on my pc! But it didn't mind laying out the plugins. Crazy.

Hmmm ... I'm having this problem with Sonar X2. So now I'm wondering if I need to install X1 first??? I'll try a custom install as adminstrator for X2 first before I install X1 and then resinstall X2, I guess, unless there's a better solution. I had no problem installing the 32-bit version of X2 earlier, but now I've done a reformat and clean install of Windows 8 64-bit and want Sonar X2 64-bit. Is there some reason I should install both 64 and 32-bit versions of Sonar? Thanks.

you need to ask this on the X1 forum. If you don't have any old projects that use 32 bit plugs then no, you don't need a 32 bit version. I'm 100% 64 bit for over a year now.
