Cakewalk Sonar 7 Home Studio Music: latency

hi,
 
newby so hope this is posted in the right forum? :-o apols if not
 
am experiencing 'latency' by recording Yamaha DD65 drum kit into MixCraft software through M-Audio USB FastTrack interface
 
would switching to Cakewalk 7 resolve this annoying 'glitch' please - as you can imagine it is quite a headache in the middle of a multi-layered audio project

    oops! might vista be the problem? (darn)
     
    will try to repeat experiment in xp + update
