Hi,
I've got a Yamaha KX49, which is just a KX8 with less keys.
I managed to get it working well as a controller with Sonar 7 Producer by following these steps (I'm doing this from memory so some tiny details might be missing, but I hope you get the idea).
1. Make sure the KX-1 and KX-2 midi channels are active in Sonar. The KX-1 channel transmits note and controller information. KX-2 transmits button and transport information. KX-3 doesn't need to be active as this channel is exclusively for communication with Yamaha's KX-Editor software.
2. On the KX-8, change the DAW software preset from Cubase AI (the default) to Sonar. Instructions for this are in the KX-8 manual.
3. The eureka moment for me was realising that the buttons and transport on the KX-2 midi channel emulate a Mackie Control surface. It kind of says so in the KX-8 manual. But you have to tell Sonar that this is the case. In Sonar go to Options, Controllers/Surfaces and set the midi ins and outs for the KX-2 channel to Mackie Control in the drop down list. All your buttons and transport functions should work now. Under the Tools menu in Sonar you should be able to click on the KX-2 control surface and assign your buttons to any of the available Sonar functions. The KX-8 manual tells you which KX button corresponds to which Mackie button name.
4. The controller knobs on channel KX-1 need to be set up as ACT MIDI controls. Go Options, Controllers/Surfaces and from the drop down list set the KX-1 ins and outs to be an ACT midi controller. Under the Tools menu in Sonar you should see the KX-1 control surface. Click on it and you should be able to twiddle the controller knobs on the KX-8 to let Sonar know which controllers are active. This is detailed in Sonar's on-line help.
Your KX-8 should now work like a dream with Sonar. The controller knobs work great with Sonar's ACT feature.
Good luck!
