Sonar Studio 8.5 Recording and Headphones Problems

We are just learning how to use our new home recording studio system and ran into some problems.  I hope you will be able to help us.  FYI, we're using a new Dell laptop with Windows 7, Sonar Studio 8.5 and a new Allen and Heath ZED 22FX soundboard with interface.  We are not using what Garage Band users would call and IMIC of any kind.  We're just plugging the 1/4 inch USB cable directly into the USBs port from the soundboard to the laptop.
 
Last night we tried recording a guitar track and it recorded but the signal was very weak when we played it back.  It also sounds distorted and very scratchy.  We could not get a clean signal.
 
The other problem that we are unable to resolve, I cannot get vocals to come out of the headphones when I sing through the mic.  I tried using the phantom power switch on the board since the mic requires phantom power. Don't know if that has anything to do with it or not.   FYI, the headphones are plugged into the soundboard and not the laptop.  We can hear the guitar track when we play it back but cannot hear live vocals. 
 
Any help you can provide would be appreciated very much!

    Well, you actually have a few things going on, so I'll try my best to walk you through.
     
    First you posted this in the VS700 Forum, and there are not as many users in here as there are in the SONAR forum, so you might get more traction there.
     
    When you recorded the guitar, I'm assuming it was an electric guitar? If you just plugged it into the 1/4" input in the mixer, you'll have an impedience mismatch, causing a very thin and distorted sound. You'll need to get a direct box for that to bring it up to a decent level before tracking.
     
    Second, I think your mixer will only allow you to monitor either the USB or the Mic\ line inputs, but not both at once, so if you're monitoring playback and trying to track additional material, you need to do input monitoring in SONAR. Check your SONAR manual on how to go about doing that, it's a great tool.
