Pro Tools in the Toolbox

Guess this is kind of like asking about satan worship at a Baptist convention, but am thinking about adding Pro Tools to my stable of software, specifically for the Mac Book Pro I bought a while back, for iPad and iPhone programming.  Am not abandoning Sonar, having been onboard since DOS days, but am interested in the ability to collaborate with Pro Tools users more directly than just swapping OMF files.  The current basic package is called Pro Tools 9 Full Version, and is $549 at the Avid site.  There is an option, called "Complete Production Toolkit 2", which adds more features ( description at http://avid.custkb.com/avid/app/selfservice/search.jsp?DocId=382011 ).  The clincher is that the additional package is $1995 (a definate show stopper at this point).  Seems to me, the main additions are associated with audio processing, which I can do in Sonar just fine, thank you, and 192 versus 96 tracks, which I don't think I'll need anytime soon.

Anyway, was wondering if I'm missing something.  Word upstairs has been in the past, that you can't do anything in Pro Tools without the complete $2500 package.  Seems to me the basic package is useful.  Am I missing something?

One thing to consider is that Pro Tools doesn't use layers the same way that SONAR does so track count is much more literal.

Having said that, I'd be mortified if anything I did ever got near 96 tracks.

Scrub trim is a feature some rely on... I wouldn't ever use it.

Replace region is great but if you've never used it you will not miss it.

There are some real detailed features that you will not miss unless you are a power Pro Tools user. The are very specific to Pro Tools work flow.

The rest is primarily for sound for picture editing.

the layers thing is not the same as Mr McCue already mentioned. but does function well in my view. I like Pro tools more and more since X1. My opinion is that the tool kit is not needed. what is needed is the rtas to vst adapter from fx expansion. to make use of all the vst you may have.

pro tools installations can sometimes be...well... trying. you may have to trouble shoot a little to.
having said all that. even though pt may be troublesome as well. I like it way more than X1. to me it comes down to these two words..."no nonsense"

I agree. I'm loving PT more and more everyday.
I have pretty much stopped using Sonar 8.5.3 all together except for 2 remaining projects.

Thanks Mike and Mike.  Am thinking I'll pull the trigger.  Am also wondering if there will be synergy between my experience in both software packages.

Yes, you'll want to just grin and buy it.

But you would have too no matter what Pro Tools level you buy... if... you want to use VST stuff.

well... If you want to use vst. that's what you'll need.
     it's not an absolute necessity.

    forgot to mention...
you'll either have to get a digidesign  Avid interface unless you go pro tools 9 then you'll need the new ilok 2. that's an added expense.

I hadn't even gotten to that sidetrack... living here near the frost line, the idea of being able to do your audio production outside, in summer clothes, next to a cheery fire pit (ignoring the other-worldly potentials of said fire pit entirely) seems.... scandalous.

I find the $600 Steinberg and Pro Tools releases to be rather disingenuous. It's like they want to misle people into to thinking "Well I WAS looking at Sonar or Ableton but hey, if I can get industry standard for a hundred bucks more why wouldn't I?". Meanwhile those packages aren't even CLOSE to as useful. I did almost fall for it myself. If I had a money tree I'd love to have those programs but I don't so I chose a tool that will allow me to do pretty much whatever I want musically that I could afford. It's also hilarious hearing people talk about problems with PT. The whole point of paying the premium is it's supposed to bloody well WORK and it can't even seem to do that. lulz...

I tried the evaluation version and decided that I would wait a while before buying Pro Tools 10.  I found the work flow a little convoluted to me.  Not impossible for me to learn but unless I see that not having it is going to cost me money, I can spend the time and money better elsewhere.  I put the money into hardware.

I use 9.06 regularly for Elastic audio as well as live recording. The rest of it is laborious bollocks once you know X1 properly.

You can also use Reaper in ReWire to use any VST instruments you want in PT.  I do that with 10.2.  There are a few things that PT does that annoy me (no freeze tracks; no faster-than-realtime bounces, and multi-monitor is a bit strange) and there are a few things that X1 does that annoy me (mostly relating to AudioSnap, automation, and the console view - why must it be so friggin tall?).  I use them both for different things, and overall I genuinely *like* both.  I tend to record in Sonar because I don't have to take the chance of losing my iLok and I use PT for everything else.

For stability? No, it's no more and no less stable than other platforms. It's a little weird with my Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 - I can't change the sample rate or latencies within PT for some reason.  I have to quit the app, change it in the control panel, and re-launch PT.  Focusrite says they've stumbled across that kind of silliness before and told me to watch the beta website.

When PT 9 was released I got my hands on a PT9HD version of the software for about $600 and it includes the Complete Production Toolkit. Was a great buy. But they soon stopped that with version 10 so wont be updating PT.
It is handy for compatability with other PT users and its already paid for itself within a few weeks of getting it.

The PT9HD I got was from someone who had bought some HD hardware and got the software with it. they sold it through eBay so that was my good luck.
