Jim Marshall RIP - The Jim Marshall Tribute Thread

A true legend. I live locally and the news is doing the rounds via my local community now

RIP Jim Marshall

EDIT - As a tribute, this would be a good thread to recall any stories about Marshall Amps we have owned. Factual, funny or otherwise...

Yeah Rain, it's a bummer. I am due at a regular session Thursday night tonight hosted by his son, Terry Marshall, I doubt he will make it tonight, but perhaps an impromptu tribute night could well be on the cards...

I have 5 Marshall Amps, love em all in their own different way...

    Re:Jim Marshall RIP 2012/04/05 06:14:04 (permalink)

Buying my first (used) Marshall after a bunch of affordable amps was like graduating. You had to have a Marshall at some point. Where I lived, Boogies were respected but rare, Fender was for older guys playing country or blues, but a Marshall was the de facto standard rock amp. It was the sound of rock and an integral part of the image. It was almost like making a statement as a "rebel".

    Here's MY funny Marshall story...

Back in the 90s, I was living w/ a friend in this old isolated house split up into 3 apartments. We lived dowstairs. The guy in the middle was gone for the week and the guy on the 2nd floor was listening to silly dance music so loud that things were shaking in our apartment.

So I took the my Marshall combo, put it on its back in the middle of the kitchen, pushed all knobs to 10, and placed the strat directly on top of the Marshall. It sounded like a plane was landing in the house.

I went out to go buy smokes.  A 20 minutes walk or so...

    Moral - you don't mess w/ a Marshall owner.

Sad to hear news like this when one of the pillars of the music world passes.

The Marshall amp/cab rig redefined what rock was to ultimately sound like.  The classic 50w head and the 4x12 cab with Celestion speakers was THE rig to have.

In all the years and decades I have played in bands, I have played with other guitarists who were playing Marshalls, but never bought one myself.  (I jammed or played in bands with 3 different guys through the years who played the original Marshalls) I ended up buying a Boogie at one point and that was satisfying to me as far as sound quality and I had a Carvin DCA-800 which powered 2 4x12 Labseries cabs....

A few years back, a few players at the church I was attending at the time, wanted to form a CCM band. I bought a Marshall 4x12 cab from one of the teens who was headed to college and was "downsizing" his gear.  I think I may have put 8 to 12 hrs total on that cabinet with jam sessions. I sold it because the band fizzled..... not one practice we held ever had all of the folks there who said they were interested. Now that's dedication!

The cabinet I owned was one of the low cost cabinets Marshall came out with in recent years..... and while it sounded really good cranked with the boogie and especially with the Carvin DC-800 pushing it.... I noticed it had a much darker sound then I remembered the cabinets from the other players I've played with who had the original series Marshall cabs.

It will be hard to replace that icon of rock.....

Here's a link to the story over on the BBC News site: Jim Marshall passes away at 88

Got a DSL401 (all tube 40 watt single 12" Celestion). Nice and loud for such a little amp. Just wish I had the room for a full stack - that would really tick the neighbors off (to go along with my drumming these last few months).

RIP Jim - you will be missed.

Sad news indeed.  I have one Marshall combo amp and 3 Marshall heads and 3 Marshall cabinets.  With the purchase of each one I thought I would sell the others, but I have not been able to give any of them up.  My favorite is the 1977 JMP Mark II 100 watt.  Classic tone at it's finest.

Rain, I had a similar encounter with a loud neighbor who always had their crappy music too loud.  I put the amp against the wall and cranked it up.  Never had a problem again.

    Re:Jim Marshall RIP 2012/04/05 11:05:20 (permalink)
Here's my Marshall story (which has been told in the CW forums before).

1979/1980 Chas Sandford (a guitar player I played with in 1970-71; look him up) calls me from England and asked me to get his Marshall head from his brother and sell it for him (Chas was broke).

I put the ad in the Recycler or some such. An Austrian guy calls me up and says can he come by and try it out. I say yes. He comes over and brings a keyboard with him and we plugs it in and he says Frank wants him to get a guitar sound for his keyboard. I say Frank who? He says Zappa. (I'm LIMH at this point thinking what a dreamer). I sell him the amp and ask his name. Peter Wolf he says. (LIMH more thinking the J. Geils guy is NOT Austrian).

Now, Peter tells me he loves the community I live in and says one day he hopes to live in a community just like it. The city is Simi Valley, California.

Fast forward to mid '90s. My son tells me his band has been contacted by an older musician to record his material from a 'concept' album from the '80s he never recorded. He wanted a young band to modernize his idea. I ask the guys name. Peter Wolf he says. An Austrian guy living in Simi Valley. I tell my son the whole story and he conveys it to Peter and Peter says "Of course I remember your father, he was a very kind man to me". I chat him up about Frank and he tells me some things. I never told him I did not believe him.

    True story.

Needless to say my son's band at the time had internal disputes about the material and they never did the album. I told them (not my son he was in favor) they made a big mistake. Youth is wasted on the youth, no?

P.S. Of course I did search out if Peter was in FZs band and of course he was.

A sad day. Jim was a great man indeed.
In the 90s I was with a division of company who were involved in a major extension of the Marshall Bletchley UK factory.  Being Chief Accountant at head office I had no reason to visit the site, but I drove down and called in unannounced one day and asked if I could have a quick look around at all. The receptionist made a telephone call and I was astounded when out came Jim Marshall to greet me! He insisted I have a full, detailed tour of the factory and called his son Terry to do this. It was one of the most amazing and happiest two hours of my life. Terry showed, and explained, everything to me from the raw materials coming in, through the production lines to an area near the end where a couple of employees do nothing but test and certify amps by playing them all day! Terry then took me back to Jim's office where, although I could see he was busy on some company business with his daughter, Jim asked Terry to fetch a bundle of memorabilia which he gave me,including a copy of the Marshall Story book which he dedicated and signed for me.  I'd also met him at a couple of music shows and he would sit and sign posters for ages until he was sure everyone had been attended to.  I remember him being a quiet, courteous and very unassuming man.  One of life's true gentlemen.
    God bless you Jim.

Great story. He always had time for everyone, especially his customers too.
I live in a village not far from the factory in Bletchley. I have bought several Marshall Amps off eBay and when I ring about getting, say, spare knobs or feet for the amp (very often that is all that is wrong with them. They just leave them for me, free of charge, in a jiffy bag with my name on in reception.) Whilst there I am always given a cup of coffee. The whole company just exudes Jims personality from top to bottom.

I know his son Terry too, who hosts a jazz / blues live / jam session in my local town on Thursdays. He too is a lovely fellow, generous to a tee with his time to musicians young and old, and is also an accomplished jazz saxophonist in his own right, often disappearing for a couple of weeks or more at a time to play around the world. In fact, he runs a jazz trio on Sundays, featuring my friend and great singer Janette Galbraith who sang the demo of my latest song 'Nothing Reminds Me of You' - which I wrote for her and put on the songs forum last week.

The venue (The Fox and Hounds, Stony Stratford UK) has announced that Terry Marshalls jazz jam night is taking place tonight, but I suspect that was sent out before they knew, but, who knows, Terry may wish to see his amazing father out in musical style tonight. We shall see.

RIP Jim Marshall, a true pioneer, legend of the music industry and a great guy.

RIP to one of the true legends, and by all accounts a good guy.

In his honor, I have a feeling it's going to be LOUD in the world today.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

I was playing rhythm guitar and singing in a band years ago. I had a Peavey amp at the time. A guitarist friend from another band called one day to ask if I knew anyone interested in his Marshall 50 watt tube combo. I bought it for $150. He had hotrodded it a bit, and the thing just screamed! I took it to the gig that night, and set it on top of my Peavey 4X10 cabinet. In the middle of the 3rd song, after singing the 1st chorus I turned to walk back to the amp and turn it up (for the 3rd time). The drummer was flipping me the bird, and the bass player was standing next to my amp with a "Just try it again bucko" look on his face. Loved that sound!

    Thanks Jim and RIP.

The only story I have is that I once loaned it to Andy Partridge from XTC, and it can be seen in the documentary where they're making 'English Settlement' at The Manor, Oxfordshire.

I have picture of myself shaking hands with Jim Marshall in front of a full stack - back when I was a young lad, must have been 25- 30 years ago. He was indeed a very courteous and unassuming guy.
