Do you "Run As Admin"?
I have SONAR X1 installed on my Windows 7 system, and I've always had it run as admin. However, I forgot what the importance is doing so was... I think to allow some plugins to work. My question is, will I need to do this when I install my SONAR X1 onto my new Windows 8 system which I'll be getting soon? Is there a way to prevent having to run as admin, or is it just always best to do so?

The only time I ever had to do that was to register the product. Otherwise, I never need to.

There have been a number of issues with VSTs that don't run right unless SONAR is run As Administrator. I just disabled UAC altogether. UAC mostly exists to protect less knowledgeable PC users from themselves.

As a SE, the only thing I can think of that would prevent a plugin from running in non-elevated mode is if it is attempting to *write* within the program directory (or any subdir thereof). It's a boneheaded prgmgr move - the host is supposed to take care of presets anyway.

I've been running without UAC for years now, no problems whatsoever. The one time I ran into an installation issue was when I was setting up a DAW for a relative and they didn't have UAC turned off.

I cannot say if UAC interferes with installations or not. I turned UAC off they day I bought my new Win7 PC. Installations have not a problem on the new PC.

UAC does not interfere with installations, it merely pauses them. It prompts you when admin permissions are required, and if something is trying to run something that is unauthorized, or you accidentally clicked on something you shouldn't have, you will be thankful for that prompt (one day). Those who turned off UAC will be probably be none the wiser. Some people think UAC was just invented just to annoy people, no it has a purpose and a good one. No it certainly is NOT just for newbies :). Anybody who understands anything about Linux should be rolling their eyes at this by now... One day Microsoft will force this setting, and for good reason.

UAC is not primarily designed to protect the system from user ignorance. Every process running in your account has your privileges . So if you are running under an administrator account, or have UAC turned off, malware can pretty much f**k with your system as it pleases--not just without your knowledge, but without your permission. So long as your computer is impervious to malware (no internet connection, never insert a CD or flash drive, not connected to a home or public network etc.) it is probably not helping you. If a virus eats your system because you did not have it turned on--then UAC might well have helped prevent it. Until then it is an annoyance.

Setting up admin in the shortcuts properties and ticking run as admin is a nice feature. Unfortunately UAC is poorly designed here IMHO. You've already granted "Run as Admin" so why it needs to be prompted everytime is beyond me. Still UAC is a good feature.

lol I understand the attempt for the analogy but they don't quite work out to the same things. A fire could happen at any time but as far as sticking to a particular workflow on a particular machine for a particular task, I don't put that particular machine at any risk. For my machines that are exposed more to outside influence, I use other means to admonish evil influences without the detriment of workflow or introducing annoyances, if you will. It has been many years now; zero issues. In my experience, most machines who end up with issues were at some point doing questionable things or visiting questionable sites.

Definitely have to throw in my vote for UAC. It was a bit clunky in Vista, but it's very clean in Windows 7. Not for nothing do you get that same process in Linux and Mac OSX.
Don't ask the question if you cannot live with the answer.

Yes the only difference is that with UAC often the lighter can go off by itself without the use of human fingers, and if you accidently light up in a petrol tank you get the chance to rewind time before you blow up and die. So quite different really.
