Field cannot be empty...lol
Some may remember this build - for my sick friend. Well it was the best guitar I've ever played and I see that with no ego...there is no way to know while building- you do the best ya can and hope it works out. I loved it so much that I wanted to see if I could do it again... I wound another set of P-90's for it. I kept all the wood natural. I wanted it to have a Gibson taste to go with the pups so I did a little thing at the end of the fretboard. The chatoyance of this guitar is unreal. I'm not good enough with a camara to show it but they give an idea. I didn't dye the Ebony black and glad about that. It too changes with the light. The edge ( or this wood- a figured Mahogany) is like nothing I've ever seen. I did hollow out the body but the maple top is thick so it's a pound or two heavier than a Strat. I sit to play so no worries. Everything about this build gave me trouble. At one point I almost gave up. I carved three times on the neck and finally realized that the only trouble was me...trying for perfection or what I feel my guitar should be. Well I got lucky. I fought with every little aspect until I could pick it up and play without any tiny thing that I thought could be better. Different....but no better. This is one I'll be playing from here on out. Sure seems quiet here...weather?...vacations?...or working like me?...well, back at it! Hope ya enjoy the pics.

*Drool!* Do you have a website setup to show these off Michael? I'd love to send a link to a friend who loves natural wood guitars.

Thank you guys! No website Craig. This is the only place I posted about the builds....and at a luthier forum. I started posting here because there were others building and posting so thought it would spur some interesting conversations and such... it didn't. I believe I mentioned I probably wouldn't post anymore builds here...that's why this time it's just the finished axe and because I built it for myself. Of course I feel the luthier forum is much more geared for it since those here that build disappeared or don't post for whatever reason. Guess you'll have to link him to this thread LOL.

Wow! That's some beautiful work (and some fantastic looking wood)!

I think you've underestimated people's interest and OVERestimated the skills of others that they would feel like posting their builds after seeing your creations! LOL! I don't work with wood and probably never could with my scattered focus - heh, but that doesn't mean the I (and, I'm sure, others) don't love to gaze (and drool) over your pics.

Thank you Drew and Barry. And Kev and Mike...posted while I was writing this. Appreciate the kudos guys and Mike...I'll try to post the next build for you..and others. Very kind Craig. It is very possible that I underestimate the interest. I did have a very cool conversation with a gentleman as a result of searching for some birdseye Maple. I inquired via email about purchasing a couple of specific boards and unknowingly wound up dealing with the owner. He suggested that I call him when he arrived at his destination as he was busy buying logs - I did. We had a fantastic, lengthy discussion. It was when I answered his question with "John Page" was really the man that inspired me that I became aware... As it turned out- he is very good friends with Mr. Page and has been for many years. He is also the man that has supplied Fender with Maple wood for years...I couldn't believe I was having a great time with a man that knew friggin' everybody in the business. Well yeah that was fun but what I'm really looking forward to is building a custom Tele for a local guy...that's what the birdseye is for. LOL...he'll have some braggin rights I guess...same wood that goes to the Fender Custom shop LOL. I have to learn how to wind a humbucker for it. I've wound some mini buckers so it should be a little easier. Those mini's are tough. He wants a Tele style bridge pup and a humbucker with a splitter in the neck...personally I've never heard a bucker split that I liked the sound of...curious what others think about it. Well it should be a fun build and maybe some here would like to see it happen. ? Mostly the design and materials have been made and I think it's going to be pretty sharp...if I don't screw it up. Here's a good shot of some of that crazy wood grain. Oh....if ya didn't notice there's no switch- yep, ya know I love a blender and it's fantastic being able to mix those P-90s with a little of this and a little of that...or a whole bunch! Just like the old classics-when that volume knob rolls from around 8-10 they start grinding oh so sweetly. (think maximus blues:)

spacey He wants a Tele style bridge pup and a humbucker with a splitter in the neck...personally I've never heard a bucker split that I liked the sound of...curious what others think about it. I always recommend doing a partial split, generally with something like 4 to 8k of resistance going to ground between the coils. Lower resistance is more SC and higher is more HB. Obviously you can use a trim pot, but I prefer to jumper things up and just make a decision. Otherwise I'd feel the urge to open things up and try adjusting the trim pot every 6 months or so. And inevitably end up putting it back to the same setting it started in. Another option to try is what I call "G&L series" wiring (after the way my G&L Tribute L-2500 bass' series/parallel switch works) - you just put a cap with an appropriate value to ground between the coils. Effectively this makes the PU single coil at higher frequencies and series humbucking at lower frequencies (with the crossover determined by the cap value). Of course it always depends on what you're going for and what kind of HB you're starting out with.

Thank you Steve, Tim and Greg. Thanks Drew. Specifics and variations for desires not really an issue-especially when it's for another. After all, it's what they want that matters. My position is that I've never heard a dual coil split that I thought sounded as good as a single coil. Maybe they can...just haven't played one yet that I liked. Maybe it's just my lame excuse for owning many guitars rather than a "dial a sound".

Love it. The P90 pups, overall design, wood tones, headstock, neck, body, hardware, it's all awesome. Ideal studio guitar; I would not allow to leave the studio hehehe
