Windows 10: new audio dropouts
Hey guys It persists, it is not single occurrence. My system started to have new audio dropouts. It happens with the big projects, but I dont thing it is memory issue as I have 16 Gb of ram. I think small projects affected too. Some time I am not even playing anything, and the pop up in a cornet appears, saying, "Audio dropout". Other times it happens during the playback and even during recording. I do not remember having this issue. I dont know if it is Windows 10 update or if it is last update to the software. I am using Presonus Studio Live 24, and Presonus claims that there should be no issues. Any suggestions? Thank you. By the way- can somebody, please, move this thread to Sonar section- not sure how I posted it here. Thanks.

WOW - I need more coffee - I think I moved this thread from Sonar forum TO the Sonar forum. DOH! Vlada - the Presonus StudioLive 24 has its on built-in WiFi - and lots of folks with laptops and WiFi have latency issues. Just for a test - please disable the WiFi and see if that has an effect on the dropouts. I'll circle back to this thread in a little bit - I have been gone for a few days now, moving to another state, so I have some catching up to do on a bunch of things. Bob Bone

Anyway... Try deleting AUD.INI first (google for details). After that, IF running latest Sonar (you don't state which specific version) go to Sonar preferences and disable - allow arm changes during playback.

My Studio live does not have WiFi. I don't have audible latency. It just stops the playback.
I am using platinum. This is a new problem. Is AUD.ini solution windows 10 specific? Thanks.

I'm seeing a number of very recent interface issues where this has resolved a similar issue, especially with Windows 10. Please follow BOTH the steps if you will in my previous post please to see if this works or not. All you will have to do afterwards is reconfigure your interface in Sonar preferences. This is definitely worth a try otherwise I would not have suggested it. Google for details. Thanks. 1) I am thinking there is some AUD.INI corruption issue happening when upgrading to Win10. It could be other reason though TBC. 2) There is a known performance bug with arm record monitoring. Latest Splat. Must be done in the order I specify..

I had a similar issue on Win 10. Calling a exorcist and having him remove Avast Anti-Virus fixed it for me. Ok, that was a bit dramatic. Still true though. ;-)

There was a thread started here by me a while back about Windows 10 upgrade turned my internal audio drivers and sound controller back on! Check in the Device Manager and see if your internal sound card has been re-enabled. If so, dis-able. Do you know how to do that? I'll watch here for a response and if you don't, I will be happy to help. If you do know how, look under System Devices and dis-able the HD Audio Controller. That will take the internal sound device completely off line, drivers and all. That one step has helped me get my latency down to almost nothing.

I had a problem yesterday. I was working on mixing and all of a sudden Sonar would not recognize my keyboard and my Roland Studio-Capture. It told me no audio device detected. Closing and restarting Sonar was no help. The keyboard was working in other Windows 10 applications and the Studio-Capture was still connected and the Studio Capture Control panel showed it connected and working. I've had several "glitches" with Sonar and Win 10 since the Ipswich upgrade and considering going back. I also have Win 7 still installed (dual boot) and went to Win 7 and finished up my mixes without problems (using the Ipswich version).

Please check my previous post first. If no joy general advice is generally (no particular order)...
1) Update audio interface drivers and firmware to latest. I strongly recommend removing old version and rebooting afterwards. Then when new one is installed reset the settings everywhere on the interface.
2) Temp disable your virus scanner. Before you do that though scan for your system for viruses and malware. Ie with AVG and Malwarebytes.
3) Make sure your audio interface is disabled in windows control panel sounds
4) Make sure the interface is plugged in USB2 socket.
5) Defrag.
6) Update your display drivers
7) Update the rest of your drivers and firmware everywhere. eg controllers.
8) Disable unnecessary startup programs and services. Remove unnecessary applications from windows add/remove programs.
9) Update your motherboard chipset (try Intel driver update site) and BIOS
10) Check windows event viewer for bugs.
11) Try deleting AUD.INI (google for details)
12) Check windows device manager. Can you disable any drivers you don't need? eg HDMI drivers.
13) Check task scheduler to make sure nothing is running whilst using your DAW.
14) Make sure CPU in windows power settings is set to 100 - min/max. Optimize your drivers for power management.
15) If you have ASIO4ALL remove it!!!
16) Tools latencymon, process monitor and process explorer are your friends here.
17) Run windows update!

All my drivers are updated, including Intel chipset and CPU, I use the built in Windows Defender and have NEVER had an issue with that. Latency Mon shows my system can handle real time data. I DO NOT use ASIO4ALL, the Roland equipment has ASIO drivers. Sonar has been working OK, only change is the Ipswich updates.

Thank you for the list of very good suggestions. I have custom built computer, so I am very aware of drivers, BIOS and other stuff. I would NOT recommend to anybody to downgrade back to Win 7. Eventually we all will be on Windows 10, Sonar updates will be tested on Win 10 and it will be better to stay with everybody and not being left behind. If there issues with Win 10, we need to work them out and move forward. I see no point in going back and make old OS catch up to the new features and updates that will be available. 3) Make sure your audio interface is disabled in windows control panel sounds
4) Make sure the interface is plugged in USB2 socket.
5) Defrag. You mean my onboard sound card? Or my actual audio interface? My interface is FireWire, not USB. My motherboard sound card also enabled- when I watch videos or listen music- I use it. I dont have to have it enabled but it never caused problems in Win 8. Nothing should be running other than Norton Antivirus. I had some issues with it giving me hundreds of false positives, especially Native Instruments- it hates NI! It was just deleting my Komplete stuff. So this thing can do anything it wants. The dropouts- it happens if I try to mute/unmute takes, or just randomly with no playback... Will monitor.

For diagnostic purposes try disabling all your audio interfaces in windows control panel sounds. For a more permanent solution you could just use your onboard soundcard in there (and route a cable from the output of the onboard sound into your audio interface). Sonar should continue to function as normal either way with your audio interface. Also the HD audio driver from the display adapter (if you have one) is in device manager, just right click and disable that. Please check post #4 (still need full feedback on this) and after trying that post #12, anyway and please keep us updated. Thanks.

How is excluding NI helps Sonar? I excluded it, but it founded it on the back up drive. It gives me like 50 false positives every time I start computer. This would be conversation for another thread. I am reading about editing AUD.INI. What exactly kind of information will I lose if I delete this file? Will I have to reconfigure my screen settings? I dont have it saved in any templates- iut just always there when I start Sonar, but it took a while to adjust it to my liking...

It just resets what is in Sonar Preferences. Just back up the old one if you are worried about it.

Did you by any chance update Nvidia graphics drivers?
I got dropouts about the same time Vladasyn, just out of the blue, the only thing I had done (apart from windows autoupdates) was update to the latest Nvidia drivers 358.50. I never install anything but the display-driver & physx, since I don´t use Nvidia´s HD-audio & 3d-glasses-stuff. After reverting to the older 355.82-driver it seems like everything´s back to normal & I´m a bit happier again.

I have been having random audio dropout problems with the Sonar message box in lower right-hand corner appearing using Windows 10. Disabling Windows Defender solved the problem. Disable all three boxes associated with Windows Defender, reboot the computer, ignore the notifications saying that the virus checker is off. Run Sonar and see if random audio engine dropouts no longer occur. My dropout would occur whether the transport was running or not but a song had to be loaded so that the audio engine was running. It didn't matter how big or how complex the song. The dropout would occur on a one track audio song with no effects.

I have heard of one more user who had Windows defender play up and hijack every vst that was loaded by SONAR causing performance problems. I haven't seen this personally but its recommended to add all your plugin scan paths as exclusions to Windows defender or any other AV program you use. I've found AV developers have tunnel vision. Their sole purpose is to prevent viruses on the system but they don't care that much about jeopardizing the performance of the rest of the system to meet their goal!

Yup just updated from zonealarm (because I was prepared to stick with cheap and crappy) to bitdefender (because it's now cheaper and probably the best). Huge difference in performance exclusions are still in of course. Anyway that's in my checklist.

Well- I did not want to go in to Antivirus discussion, but if you mentioned it- I have Norton 360 Prime. It never gave me false positives until the last update when they made it compatable with Win 10. Now it gives me 2-30 false positives on every computer boot, especially Native Instruments. (yes, I already said it). So I set it to do nothing when it find thread, because in the past it would delete what ever it wants. Now it just warns me and I ignore it. I do have my VST folders excluded- I am not sure if it finds it on back up drive or what. How do I disable Windows Defender? Also- how do I back up my preferences? Thanks.

It is still running scans all the time and takes up CPU. Have you actually tried entirely disabling Norton to see if it improves performance? Hiding or doing nothing is not the same as disabling BTW. If it's coming up with false positives all the time it's probably in overdrive BTW, vladasyn How do I disable Windows Defender?
I just googled "Disable windows defender": http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/5918-windows-defender-turn-off-windows-10-a.html vladasyn Also- how do I back up my preferences? Thanks.
If you are talking about AUD.INI you just need to rename it to AUD.INI.BAK - your settings will be backed up. Please google "delete AUD.INI" for further instructions. Cheers..

Vlada, for whatever the worth, I also have my Native Instruments sample libraries and both Cakewalk Content and Cakewalk Projects excluded from my antivirus software - which happens to be Avast. There can be zillions of files associated with a sample-based instrument, such as a lot of what Kontakt loads, and you can really help speed things up by keeping that whole folder excluded from being scanned every time files are accessed. Your real-time protection is still in place, and those sample libraries are static, so they are not being updated on any kind of regular basis. Bob Bone

2 cents, this is a professional DAW for my studio and for any streaming application (After Effects, DAW) ..just disable the antivirus. I disable the network card and the antivirus, windows 10 has a veritable crapload of services running , most of which have no business on a DAW. updaters for everything. Always disable the local sound card, no matter what brand/model of interface you use with the DAW. Sorry you cant play youtube videos. I created a shortcut that enables and reboots if I want to play youtube videos. If I want to play a local file without opening the daw I use audacity or ozone which is set to use the interface, don't let windows touch the interface. I would follow the Doktors orders on the sonar settings and I wish you luck. All these special handling issues are why some companies control the environment so much (Apple etc.) It is also why Pro Tools has so many restrictions on its environment and hardware.

Maybe a long shot, but I would suggest checking out a trial of the latest version of System Mechanic for Windows. I try to keep as much garbage off my DAW computer, as I can, but this actually helped me get more performance out of my Windows 10 system, which dropped my CPU levels in Sonar quite a bit. The latest version of System Mechanic has a couple features called Power Sense, and Live Boost which recognizes certain applications, like Games, Graphic Programs, and even Daws, and turn off certain windows features off and boost other areas, so you get the best performance out of your system while working. They already have a profile included which recognizes Sonar X3, but it doesn't recognize Sonar Platinum yet. Maybe in the next update. No problem though, I just created my own user profile in "Ultra Performance Mode". When you do this, system mechanic gives you a long list of features that you can select to turn off / disable, when you start Sonar. For example Antivirus, Windows Audio, Networking, ect. Then every time you start Sonar, it automatically does all this in the background. In addition to this feature, it does a bunch of other that you may or may not want to use, like Registry Cleaner, Startup Disable, ect. BTW, I have nothing to do with this company, just a user of their program. Last time I checked, they had a free version (probably less features, and a trial version. May be worth checking out. Easy to install and uninstall.
