Headphones, Loudness and noise - AKG K701

i had been using AT M50x cans for a while.

nice.

but wanted something a bit more neutral.

got the AKG K701s.

then, i needed a headphone amp.

enter the Schiit Asgard 2.

then i was getting crazy digital noise (ground loop).

enter the Art DTI.

took some time, but this set up is GLOOORIOUS!

each step of the way with these headphones, i did lots of digging.
seems to be a common scenario.

just wanted to share a solution.

shhh QUIET!

No doubt those were a significant step up from the ATH-M50s. I'm a fan of open-back cans for their truer frequency response, even if they're not suitable for all tasks. Hopefully you saved the Audio Technicas for tracking.

Q: why did you feel the need for a headphone amplifier?

I wasn't getting the loudness using the Scarlett 18i8 headphone output.

common occurrence i found out AFTER buying the AKGs.

    plenty loud now.

i've read many complaints about the lack of bass. but with this headphone amp, YOW!
    very nice.

    here's the amp:

    it's a Schiit.

oh, i did not save the ATs.

    guitar center return.

after listening to these AKGs, i had a hard time using the ATs - uncomfortable listening.

i don't do much microphone tracking. but i will eventually.

for now, the K701s will do juuust fine.

I'd be inclined to purchase from that company, just because of their marketing text:

Try Asgard 2 in your own house for 15 days. If you don’t like it, simply send it back for a refund, minus a 5% transaction fee. Try spending 15 days in an audio store. They’ll kick you out. Unless you buy them donuts. Maybe.

Yeah the rest of the site is funny too.  The name of their budget DAC (portable USB for travel) is Fulla!

    Fulla Schitt!!

These guys do have a sense of humor, but the companies they come from are high end audiophile type...
