make sure your sample rates are in synch.
one might be running 41, the other 48.

I'm not sure why you would record to a digital recorder when you have a daw that can probably do a better job,, not knocking it,, I did the same up until I figured out that DAW's can and do work better..
    This:
"a Cakewalk user for 15 years, i don't have any problems recording synced up to my PC"
but your issue seems to be one of just that?
How old is the Roland? first thing comes to mind is it is most likely the problem.
It's tricky setting up word clock etc but you say you've been doing it for 15 years so I'll asume you know how to do that. I've synced a few things to Sonar and it always worked just fine if  Sonar was the master.
Is the Roland the Master or the Slave?

all my backing tracks that using in my band are on the 1680 i'm wanting to record them to the laptop as a backup just in case, never had a problem with the roland crashing i've never seen a computer that dosen't lock up @ 1 point & also i want to put event markers in the songs i'm doing on the laptop so it'll change presets in my preamp/processor & i've got a lot of eciits & background vocals that it would take a long time to redo i can go right now from the Pc & sync up to the 1680 without a problem

The waveform image in the clip is just a visual representation. It's not necessary for the recording to be performed flawlessly. Have you actually checked if the recording really stops when the waveform drawing stops? It could be a video card issue (??) If the Now Time marker keeps moving, and signal levels showing, I'd guess the recording is going normally as well.

I had to re read what you have given so far. a few more clear details would certainly help, Like you say "my PC" is that a desktop that works but your laptop does not?
To trouble shoot the more info and details the faster we can figure stuff out..don't be bashfull about exactly what your using and how.
I have used both hardware ( minidisk,,Yamaha MD8)  and laptop to play my backing tracks so I'm on your side.
Laptops can cause more issues because of bloatware, background processing and the special type of bios they use. You need to be set up for recording. It sounds like a background process interfering. Run LAtMon
