Velvet or EP88?

I'm trying to see which may be the better deal. I see waves has the EP88 on sale for $39. The Velvet is part of the Air complete upgrade which is $80 US. The Lounge Lizard is $99 from cakewalk or part of the $299 upgrade for Platinum.

So any suggestions on the instruments? Is the EP88 any good or just a waste of money? Or is the Velvet comparable to the EP88 and LL? I might add I'm really not to sure I need yet another set of pianos but want to take advantage of the sales if they are worth the cost.

While the EP88 can be had for $29 at EveryPlugin with the KV146 code,
the AIEP Complete for $80 gets you a WHOLE LOT for few dollars more.
The QUESTION is...do you need MORE?

I don't really need more synths. I was trying to get an idea if someone has experience with the pianos and how they compare. The sampled ep's in the synths I have are ok but seem somewhat limited. If the Velvet is the better one then I will spring for it. The price of the LL will be a harder sell for me unless everyone says it's the best.

Nevermind. My bad. I found a comparison of these and more on youtube. I should have searched first. Thanks anyway.

I have the Lounge Lizard Session that comes with Sonar and I decided to get the Electric88. It was $20 cheaper than the LL upgrade. I really like it. Is Velvet $50 or $60 better?  Not to me.

They way I look at it is LL at $49 upgrade. I can install on two systems.  I think that deal is still there.
EP88 - $80 on two systems. Unless you want to mess with a USB stick or their cloud. Plus the WUP harassment.
Velvet - single machine license, iLok protection which can create conflicts with the evolving Windows 10.

Lounge Lizard: tiny modeled footprint with amazing sound.
EP88: larger 'cause sampled but still small with good sound yet (too) short decay.
Velvet: (much) larger 'cause sampled but with a nicely full sound.

That pretty well explains it. Well done, Fleersy.

Re: Velvet or EP88? 2016/08/12 18:01:41 (permalink)
The comparisons I found pointed to a Premier Mark 96 or something like that. When I went to go look it up I found it was out of my comfortable price range.

I guess for those of you with SPlat, the LL upgrade is $49 but for me, the full version was $99. I also tend to lean toward sampled sounds as I'm kinda burned on modeled sounds. Not that there is much wrong with them other than me having some some bad experiences. A lot of the soundblaster voices still make me cringe.

So, based solely on Fleer's comment I went for the Velvet as part of the Air Complete pack. If I don't like it I will hold fleer to task. Just kidding! All things considered it seemed to be a highly regarded group of instruments and was a good deal. Now, If I can just get the serials from PB and make it through all the iLok shtuff...

Thanks all!

I really like the modeling instruments like AAS LL-4. Was thinking about upgrading Session version to the full, but cannot justify spending 50$ for it, considering so many great options for Rhodes and Wurli EPs I already own, especially Velvet which is very usable and great sounding instrument. Can't go wrong with it.

I finally got it installed and authorized. Love it, love it. I've been tinkering for hours. I haven't found a bad sounding preset yet. They all have a unique character. The velocity curve is spot on and the balance across the keyboard range is very good too.

I haven't explored all the other Air Complete instruments much but what I have seen is pretty cool. I haven't even touched the plugins yet.

LL is my go to EP. Good dynamic range and expressive. Small footprint. You can also tweak the sound and get a huge variety of EP sounds. With sampled EP you get a very realistic sound but you can't change much compared to the physical modeled EP. Don't forget pianoteq 5 also has an excellant physical modeled EP.

Sonar Platinum. Win7 64bit. i7 CPU 4770. 14 Gig RAM. Roland A500Pro controller keyboard. Korg Krome 88. M-audio Audiophile 2496 soundcard, Focusrite 18i8, Roland UA25EX. Ivory II, True Piano, Addictive Keys, Synthmaster, Harmor, Zeta +2, Lounge Lizard 4, Geist, Miroslav 2, Sample Tank 3. Kaiser grand piano. Shure KSM137 x2. Wave's Renaissance and Gold. Breeze. ST3. Pianoteq 5. AD2.Aether Reverb, Dune2 , Reason 10 and Komplete 10 Ultimate, Syntronik, O8N2 adv, Studio one 3.5 Pro.

Absolutely, those Pianoteq electrics are up there with Lounge Lizard on the modeled front. But there's still something about sampled pianos, electric or not, that fills the room in a different way. Less tweakability and playability, sure, but that sound, that sound ...
