Query: Can I integrate Guitar Pro via Rewire into Sonar for MIDI composition?
Edit (for clarification): I am referring to the tablature/notation software Guitar Pro. More deets here... https://www.guitar-pro.com/en/index.php?pg=guitar-pro-6 Hello, all. Hope everyone is off to a good new year. This may be a dumb/fundementally flawed question because I have not as of yet given myself a full crash course into exactly what Rewire is capable of... nor have I used Guitar Pro for ages (and barely poked at it back in the day when I did). However I am curious as to whether GP can be Rewired into Sonar (Platinum) for MIDI sequencing purposes. eg: I would like to use GP to do notation and/or tablature based MIDI sequencing then feed it directly into Sonar to MIDI tracks feeding synths in the Synth Rack and of course have that feed into instrument/audio tracks for mixing the results in real time. Essentially GP would act as my notation/composition software and SPlat would handle everything else. I want to do this for my guitar lesson stuff so I can kill multiple birds at once (I won't bore you with the details and am not even sure what those details would look like yet which is why I'm asking). So has anyone done this and/or are there any up to date Guitar Pro users on site who can give some insight/opinions/reviews on the current GP release and it's capabilities? Thanks in advance and have an enjoyably nerdy day. Cheeeeers!

DAMMIT! This was supposed to be posted to the SONAR forum. Any hosts around who could move it there for me? Sorry doods. Apparently I have forgotten how to post threads properly. Derp.

Not to worry Beep all is well. Now I'm curious. Why do you think you need GP when you have Sonar?

Thanks, John. And to answer your question it's for some of the ultra specific guitar oriented tab/notation tools AND that GP files are kind of a standard for guitar educational material. If you poke around the internet for guitar tablature you'll generally see a lot of text based tabs (which I am proficient at but they are a bear to type up manually and are really limited for the end user) and GP files for users to download and open in GP which are much more thorough/informative/editable/etc (as well as being multi-track). It's just kind of the go to program for guitar dorks and that, of course, will be my main audience. By being able to integrate it into Sonar it would allow me to offer a bunch of formats at once for any prospective students by way of the GP files, standard MIDI files, regular audio files, hard copy notation and tablature files (for printout), etc. Also being a guitar related program it offers quite a bit more in the way of scale and chord options for composition and eductaional purposes for guitar players. It's kind of like why orchestral folks would use something like Sibelus or other high end notation software except it's geared toward guitar freaks (which require a whole 'nother level of intracies due to the nature of guitar due to the massive amount of alternate voicings/positions/etc than other instruments). Hopefully that makes sense. Cheers and thanks again for moving this.

And for the curious here is their features page.... https://www.guitar-pro.com/en/index.php?pg=guitar-pro-6 Don't work for them nor am I attempting to promote them. Most serious guitar players know what GP is all about but it might shed some light as to WHY it's a useful tool for us noodle monkeys. ;-)

Heh... no. Not Guitar Tracks at all. GP isn't a DAW so much as a notation/MIDI sequencer. It does have MIDI export fershure but I guess I'm wondering if it can stream live MIDI out via Rewire. Not even sure if Rewire DOES that (or is it only for audio output from a sequencer?). And I guess another pertinent question would be does the program being fed into another program via Rewire (in this case Guitar Pro into SONAR) have to have special coding for Rewire? Sorry... probably a poorly phrased question. Do BOTH programs (sender and receiver) require some special Rewire capability? Like I said... not very well versed on this stuff yet... thus the thread. Edit: And Sonar in no way can handle what I'd need to throw at it nor export to the GP file format I need. Not a dig or request. It would be ridiculous for Cake to even consider wasting time on trying to create it's own in house version of GP. I have however mentioned in the past how I think GP would be an EXCELLENT third party partner to solve its notation woes. As in approach the GP creators to figure out how to integrate it into SONAR's MIDI capabilities BUT charge for that option as an add on. That of course is just the musings of a mildly insane guitar geek. I think GP may have a corporate deal with other DAWs anyway that might conflict with such an arrangement. Not sure.

Rewire can stream MIDI and audio. Rewire only works if both programs support it.

Perfect. Now I just need to figure out definitively if GP has Rewire capabilites... which as you noted is not immediately apparent from their literature but I will dig deeper (or wait for another user here to chime in). Thanks.

Beepster, there is 1 other complication with rewire, both programs (sender and receiver) have to be 32bit or 64bit. Mixing 32bit with 64 bit won't work. There is a utility/plugin thingy that does allow mixing 32bit with 64bit, but I'm not sure how reliable it is. I'll track it down if you need it.

Given how awful SONAR's tab support is, I though Guitar Pro 6 would be a nice solution. Sadly Guitar Pro's MIDI export is pretty much unusable. It doesn't correctly render slurs/tied notes. Its MusicXML export is good though, but SONAR doesn't import MusicXML (only export). So I have been using the open source MuseScore 2 application to convert Guitar Pro's MusicXML to MIDI. MuseScore has a command line interface which I've written a tiny DOS batch script to run and hooked it to the Windows "Send To" menu so I can just right click a MusicXML .xml file and convert it to a .mid file. Though MuseScore sometimes has issues with some MusicXML files it does a reasonable job most of the time. Now that I think about it though maybe I'm the only person to not be able to use Guitar Pro's MIDI output. I've never seen anyone else complain about it.

Thanks, guys. @John... I don't own a current version of GP. @shawker... Thanks. I'll look into that so no need but the heads up is appreciated. Exactly this type of insight I'm looking for. Soooo... armed with this fresh info/understanding of the situation I've gone digging around and alas GP6 (the current version) does not support Rewire. That sucks. Now I do NOT want to add to any kind of internet rumor mill because I have not seen ANY other reference to this aside from some vague references on other forums that GP7 will/might have Rewire capabilities. DO NOT QUOTE ME ON THAT ANYWHERE. Just something to maybe look forward to. There seems to also be references to a (Presonus) Notion alternate program called "Progression" that supposedly has Rewire capabilities but again DO NOT QUOTE ME ON THAT because I don't see any confirmation as of yet in my precursory searches. I will have to research all that further. However since GP files are indeed the standard currency for guitar tabs I think I'm simply going to have to suck it up and work around it's limitations (lack of Rewire) and/or wait for GP7 in hopes that they do indeed implement Rewire. This was mostly an exploratory venture to nail down as many previously unknown variables in my nefarious scheme and has indeed help me gain a better understanding of what I'm facing. Also, based on some of these prelim searches, there does seem to be quite a bit of bafflegabbery at the fact NOONE has thought to integrate GP (and other highly feature rich notation/tablature programs) into the main DAWs aside from maybe Cubase (and Reaper has apparently added notation recently) but that still does not address my specific needs for GP style editing. ...and there is no way in heckola I'm switching to Cubase because after watching many vids on the modern version... Beepso no likey. Sorry for bringing up other programs but it's germane to the discussion. To paraphrase spazzy Shawn from TrustMedia... Sonar Rocks my werld!

I didn't think GP 6 did because if it did it would be listed. Its a major feature after all. I have Progression I'll check if it works with rewire.

Beepster, I got Progression packaged with Fishman Triple Play. I never really used it but still have it around somewhere. If it becomes important for you, I could dig it out and see if it rewires.

Cool, guys. If you just happen to have a chance to check it then I (and I'm sure others) would be interested in the answer. Maybe just having this thread pop up in the Googley Moogleys might get the GP developers of their arses and make sure GP7 does indeed have Rewire capability (and 64 bit which based on the comments here it may not... which would suck and put them behind even Avid for modernity). Thanks again. I have a much clearer picture of the situation now. Knew I could count on my fellow Sonarites.

I looked at the Fishman release notes. It looks like Progression will only rewire audio. There is no MIDI out which would control synths in sonar or make a MIDI track. You can export MIDI to a file but it looks like you are already doing this. Progression does not let you play back through TriplePlay or other virtual instruments directly; however, you can export your score from Progression as a MIDI file and, using a Digital Audio Workstation, play your converted score through any virtual instrument compatible with the DAW.
This discusses Studio One and Notion rewired. Again, looks like audio only http://blog.presonus.com/...-notion-to-studio-one/

Yeesh. I'm getting the impression this is another one of those scenarios where my wants/needs simply exceeds the current technology. As a n00b (well not so much these days but still pretty green) I was/am consistently dumbfounded by the sheer power of digital audio stuff that I just kind of assume certain things are possible/obvious but then have to check myself/expectations frequently when stumbling upon cases like this. Pretty easy to forget how young so much of this tech is. Still a little frustrating of course but there was a reason I never bothered pursuing computer recording until recently. It was simply not able to do what I wanted/needed within my budget and/or IQ. Truly a golden age for us independent musicosmologists. ;-) Thanks for checking that out.

Simple answer, unfortunatelqy : no, it doesn't.
Notion does, Sibelius also, etc.
Don't hold your breath waiting for GP7, the 6 version has been around for many years..............
BTW, i've found its midi handling is OK, for what i do.
Cheers, Jerry

I use Gp6 every day. Great program, but sadly no rewire.
I don't understand why you feel the technology you want doesn't exist. It just doesn't exist in GP6 yet.
I use several programs that will rewire, such as Notion and Musescore.
Check out the later, there are loads of tutorials and it is free.
