figuring out which cwp files have audio attached
is there a tool to find out which of my cwp files have audio attached? i know i can use the clean audio folder to find out what .wav files aren't used by any cwp files anymore. but is there a way to kind of search the opposite. basically i just wanted to go thru and make bundles of all my files that include audio tracks, but without opening each one, one by one, i can't really know which ones have audio tracks in them. any thoughts? thanks

I don't think there's any better way than to see which projects have a Per Project Audio Folder, if you have used that option when creating projects. If you haven't...I have no ideas. You are aware of that the bundles are more vulnerable than cwp's, are you? If a bundle gets corrupt, it's gone, if a cwp gets corrupt, you still have at least the audio intact. I mean, if you think about bundle files as a back up method, don't.

How many files do you have? If there are a workable number then this method should help. I just did it for myself. A workaround: 1. Move all your audio files to a new folder. 2. Open each file and note the one's that are looking for an audio file. 3. Move the audio files back to the original folder. It's a pain but, it's the only way I know how.

yea i don't use Per Project Audio Folders because I'm still basically working on the same workflow since like Cakewalk Pro Audio 6 haha. was not aware of bundles being more prone to corruption. that sucks. i was just looking for a cleaner way to do a big huge major backup of all my tracks that didn't have multiple folders and multiple files per project. just recently broke 75gb. only getting bigger... guess i'll just have to do it that way. i also still gotta go through and start deleting my version 1s version 2s version 3s etc of some songs i have (which I assume may also have separate wav recording takes associated with them, so i might even be able to get the audio data folder a little smaller in the process).

Use a file finding utility (I like "File Locator Lite" http://www.mythicsoft.com...elocatorlite&page=home ) and have it search for *.cwp files that contain the text ".wav". Adjust as necessary for .wrk files, or files that contain .rx2 audio loops. And if you've done video projects, .avi or .mov etc. What other file types does Sonar reference in its projects?

wow. now that could be cool. do you think that would work for another age old problem i've never been able to get help with, finding out which presets i used in old project files from before i switched to a new computer and now when i open the project file it can't find the synth "Dimension Pro" because either it was called Dimension or Dimension Pro 1 or Dimension Pro DXi or Dimension Pro VSTi, something stupid like that on my old computer. if i could just find out what presets i had used, I can pop up synth rack, load up new instances of dimension and load each of the sounds if they're listed in there somewhere. only one way to find out i suppose haha. i'll give that a try.

Right, start by switching IMMEDIATELY to using Per Project files. Now, and this is going to take some time, but it's foolproof and you'll end with shedloads of free space on your audio drive. You do have a separate drive for audio yes? Good. - Create a new folder on your audio drive, under Cakewalk Projects and call it whatever you want. If you don't have a folder called Cakewalk Projects, then that's as good a name as any.
- Open up a project
- Do a Save As and point the location to your new folder
- Make sure you've got "Copy Audio With Project" ticked
- Close project
- Repeat steps 2 - 5 for all of your projects
- Now you can delete all of the .wavs that are left over by your copying
- Defrag the entire drive.

not a bad idea. only problem is i have 100's if not over 1000 tracks i can't open anymore because they (like in my last response) have synths pointing to the wrong names from previous computers (Dimension not Dimension Pro, so it can't find it) and so I'm still gonna be left with tons of projects I don't want to mess up in the process. bah. i'm kinda screwed haha. but i guess it's a good time to start the per project audio folders.

Only 75 Gigs?? Why worry about cleaning them out. 75 Gigs is nothing these day's. I do as Bristol Jonesey does to create back up files that are cleaned out of unwanted audio files. In your situation I would go pick up a external drive and make a drag and drop back up of the whole 75 Gig Cakewalk Project folder. This will give you the option of retrieving any screw ups that may happen. And from now on use the per project folder option. AND do constant "save as" to the back up drive as you work. I keep 3 copys of all projects--- forever. Hard drives are cheap. My time is valuable.

my biggest problem is it's completely impossible to do an online/cloud backup. basically external harddrive is my only option. 75gigs even on my cablemodem would pretty much take the rest of my life, and that's only if my computer managed to stay connected long enough to get it all uploaded haha.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but how about using CWAF? CWAF is the Cakewalk Audio Finder and it is more advanced than Clean Audio Folder. It will list all your CWPs and all your WAV files. When you click on a CWP it shows all the associated WAV files. And similarly, if you click on a WAV file it shows the associated CWPs. It can also move files to the Windows Recycle Bin, where it might be possible to then retore them, but to a different location? I'm not really sure about this part of it!
