file import problem

Hi, When I import a file instead of nestling into the project at the start it for some reason nestles onto the selected track 10 recording minutes away thus necessitating a copy and paste or a long tiresome drag. Its a real bind and I can't seem to find out why its happening or how to cure it. Any help would be gratefully received to rid myself of this irritant. Thanks
