[fixed] Sonar X1 install on Win 7 64 bit; Failure to update registry
I got these types of registry update errors when installing X1 onto a new 64 bit laptop.
X:\Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared Surfaces\VS20.dll <--- there were numerous DLLs called out, one at a time
Unable to register the DLL/OCX: RegSvr32 failed with exit code 0x3.
Click Retry to try again, Ignore to proceed anyway (not recommended), or Abort to cancel installation. "Retry" never worked. "Ignore" was the only thing you could do to get to the end, but ... it really didn't work as I mention below.
Here's a link to another thread describing a similar issue:
http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=2152500 The 64 bit version of Sonar wouldn't even work; it would complain that it wasn't properly installed.
Searches here revealed a number of things to try, but here's what worked for me. I am posting this so that the next time it happens and I google these errors again...maybe I'll find my own post in this forum.
1. Check for pending "Windows Update" updates, especially those that might require a reboot.
2. Boot.
3. Temporarily disable Windows Firewall and antivirus.
4. Insert the X1 installer DVD. Kill the autorun dialog. Navigate manually to the location on the DVD where the setup.exe file resides.
5. Right-click and run as administrator that setup.exe file.
6. Answer the prompts as needed.
Install worked.
I know that running as Admin alone did not help.
I think item 1 above was the thing preventing me from success. A reboot to allow windows updates to finish applying is probably what fixed my situation.
