You can use the "quantize" function, and specify note lengths, or you can simply hold the cursor on single notes, in the correct position you should see it turn into an icon resembling this: <---> , and then click and drag the end of a note to the right or left to lengthen or shorten it...

thanks tor,
i know about these.
however, quantize makes some notes too long and some just right,
second method (manual) is ... ehh, manual.
i'm suprised there is no "overlapping notes fix all" or something to that effect . logic has it. cubase probably too. oh well maybe in version 8.
cakewalk should look into this.

For creating a real mono instrument, like a trumpet, in which no notes can overlap??

yes, or bass.
i know i could play it really carefully or edit notes individually.
but isn't that too much work,
sonar should do it for me, no?

Hi jarred-

does anybody know where is that edit function to shorten overlapping notes.
i can't find it in sonar 5 studio.

You might want to try "LEGATO.CAL", typically under Process | Run Cal | Sample Content. That's worked well for me, but post back if you have questions.

I haven't tried it myself, but there's a CAL file called "single.cal" that's supposed to do what you want. If you don't already have it, you can get it in the Cakewalk download area. Go to this location and download the file called "26 Assorted CAL Routines.zip": ftp.cakewalk.com/pub/CAL/

Let us know if this works for you.

thank you.
legato cal seems to work better for me since you can even specify "distance" between notes.
single works too, but what is that tick safety in single.cal?
is there a full description of cal listed anywhere. can't find it in -help-.
why do they hide those useful functions so deep, ?
thanks again.

Many, but not all, CAL files have some helpful comments in the files themselves. You can search for the CAL files in your SONAR folder and open them up in a text editor like Notepad to read the comments. Here's what the comments say about single.cal:

; Scott Michael Kemp - Serial Number: 400899 - CP - 4.0

; SINGLE.CAL
;
; Makes sure that a monophony solo or bass line has no overlapping notes by
; making the offending (overlapping) note shorter.
;
; Overlapping notes will cause problems with some synths in that the note
; that is getting overlapped by the first will cut off at the same time
; as the first. This routine makes sure that will never happen
;
; The routine asks the user for a safety margin in Ticks. Some slower synths
; will require a longer safety margin
;
; Note: If no notes are overlapping, this routine does nothing.

Can you adjust the polophany on the sound module patch to "1" ? That would fix it.

no ohhey,
it wouldn't fix it all the time,
sometimes you'd lose attack of the sound, and with some modules the whole next bar would be silent.

thanks henkejs for the notepad tip.
thanks Susan.
how much more stuff is hidden in this crazy old software???

Once legato.cal does not work as expected (ie, connect only the selected notes), I discovered a trick to make just the selected notes become legato (for monophonic melodic lines):
1) Select the sequence of notes
2) Force an overlapping of the notes (increase duration of notes, so that the end of each note always goes beyond the beginning of the next note)
3) Finally, run the SINGLE.CAL
You will see that all selected notes will be in perfect Legato.

Good tip Rogerio, even if it is on the back of a 10 year old thread.

So we see that nothing in these scripts has been improved in all this time ...

CAL is no longer even supported, hasn't been for years and will certainly not get any improvements by Cakewalk.

There are a small number of users who understand the scripting language and could if pushed make changes to existing scripts.

I understand, but if CAL is no longer supported, it should neither be provided, is not it?
In fact, in more than 10 years, always the same CAL scripts are supplied in new versions of Sonar, so these functions should have been incorporated in Sonar natively.
Still, CAL is a user way to overcome the limitations of Sonar.
Therefore, it is a Cakewalk incoherence to give no more support to CAL.
