free anti virus..any suggestions?

I wonder if there's a free anti virus software that will work well in my DAW. Hopefully something free

Yes, another +1 for AVG free. Note that the AVG site makes the free version rather hard to find because not surprisingly they want to sell you the full version. Googling for AVG free is your best bet.

Although its good it does not stop everything.
Your computer can have loads of small Trojans secretly sending information. Do a check on your PC with a free tool called hihjackthis. Be very careful with this tool as you have to be experienced in using it as it deletes files and registry key if you hit the wrong key. make sure you have a backup of your registry.
Also it's best if you don't have any anti-virus software on your Pc that you use for sonar. It can cause problem running in the background.
I don't have my music PC connected to the Internet, its must safer that way.

    the kitchen sink is optional

I use avg , but have used the trial of errm NOD and also the Panda one.. both aren't massive footprints unlike norton..

thing is with the older AVG you could get the updates and not put the machine online, now it's not so

    filehippo updater is good though

    +1 for Avast.

Avast is free for home users.

Been using Avast for a bit over a year, and detect no interferences with DAW software operation.

Also Avast can be easily disabled and re-enabled simply by right-clicking the Avast icon in the taskbar and selecting Stop\Start On-Access Protection.

THere is a site called Major Geeks - like majorgeeks.com or something - that lists tons and tons of PC related security programs - many of which are free.

By the way, do not confuse this with MajorGeese - a website for the famed Canadian bird.

I’ve had no problems with my Internet computer by using Ccleaner, AVG, Windows Defender and the Windows firewall. All are free programs. AVAST is another good free antivirus program, however I’ve been using AVG for years now with no problems so why change.

But, IMHO, the best scenario is not to have your DAW computer connected to the Internet. That way you can eliminate all of the background running anti-whatever programs. Nothing will interrupt your CPU if it’s not there.

    Just my thoughts.

AVG for me. I used Avast until they went to version 8 and when I d/l and installed v8 it started slowing things down and locking up resources. I thought I must have installed NORTON by mistake! so I uninstalled it and started using AVG Free. it works well without hogging resources.

You are discombobulated. Avast is only at version 4. There is no version 8 for the free version of Avast. Furthermore, Avast doesn't lockup resources or hog resources. Upon reading these incorrect statements of yours, it's evident that you are confused or mislead. You probably did install Norton because your statements concerning Avast are incorrect.

Perhaps you should pay more attention to detail concerning what you are installing on your PC. The Avast site even lists the latest version of Avast as version 4.

Perhaps you've been suckered into downloading and installing a bogus program assuming the name of Avast.

Another vote for AVG here. V8 isn't as light on resources as V7 was, but still pretty good. Also use AdAware, and between the two I've stayed nice & clean.

MarioD , I wouldn't rely on windows inbuilt firewall IF your not behind a router with a firewall also, even then zone alarm etc are free also..MS firewall it's far from the best free one, it just does the minimum or else the other makers would say monopoly..

James, the issue I have with adaware is that and spybot s&d conflict.

Reece.. feeling of deja vu from the software forum ? haha

yes, you're right, I had them backwards. sorry. AVG is what I STOPPED using at version 8 and Avast is what I use now.

    Hi Beagle:

I just wanted to show my appreciation for a freely available good anti-virus program, and I sure don't like mis-information being spread.

My opology if I came off too tense.

I'm glad you have it straightened out, now, though.:)

Take care and cya around. I'm not upset with you. Peace be multiplied.

Great! thanks, Thomas! I really don't mind being corrected if I make a mistake at all as long as it's not hostile. I do appreciate you correcting me - it was just a simple mistake.

I have found that I really do like Avast better than AVG anyway because of what you've already mentioned about how it's easy to disable and doesn't take up resources.

I can't stand Norton. it's a monster. anyone remember TRON? the MCP? THAT's what I think of when I think of Norton!
