free program for converting mp3s

anyone know of a good free (or cheap) downloadable program that i can get that will let me take a wav and convert it to mp3 with various different bitrate options? i just need to take this wav and reduce the quality a little bit to get the filesize down.

thanks
Dave

CDex is a popular choice, and the one I currently use.
    It offers several bitrate conversions

You can also google "lame mp3 encoder" and set it up as an option in sonar. Though, I don't remember how I did it, but I got the instructions from this forum.

thanks! cdex worked fine. a little goofy the way you have to go into options each time before hitting convert to change the quality settings, but hey, it's free and i needed it now :-)

i'll look into lame mp3 encoder. i know of it from other programs, but i've never had it working in sonar, that would actually be awesome. i'll take a look around for those instructions.

if you just want to convert files you can try foobar2000, its free and it works for me very well, if file size is the only consideration here you may consider the FLAC format as well, file size will be ~60-70% of the WAV and FLAC is lossless where mp3 is not, winamp supports FLAC natively and im other players do as well or have plugins available, anyway give foobar2000 a spin.......

Wavepad  It's free, a mighty fine audio editor and it converts to all the MP3 rates.

I use Cool Edit, a program I picked up in 1998 that still runs well under XP and Win 7. http://www.oldapps.com/CoolEdit.php http://www.mp3-converter.com/cool_edit_2000.htm I believe that Audacity will also perform mp3 conversions--I think you need to install the LAME encoder to provide that functionality. it's pretty easy. http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ Good luck, LR
