freezing pointer

hello everyone and happy 4th
every now and then when i'm working the pointer either freezes or still moves but has no effect. the only way I can figure out what to do is reboot the computer by holding down the power switch. sometimes my work is saved, sometimes not.
what I've done so far is make sure all the normal windows maintenance stuff is done, empty cashe, clean disk and the sonar stuff, clean audio disk etc.
anyone have any ideas on what does this and how to fix it??

    The only time I've had this happen consistently is when the USB cable on my mouse was failing. I don't think that's what's happening with you, but it's easy enough to swap out for another mouse to at least eliminate a mouse hardware glitch as the problem.

    You can shut down your computer without a mouse. On your keyboard Hit the key combo Ctrl Alt Del and it'll give you options to shut down, restart, open the task manager, etc. Use the arrow keys to select what you want and press enter. It's better than just cutting off the power (although I think Windows tries to shut down softly with a press of the power button these days). Also you can save your work with a keybinding as well. I forget what it is by default in Sonar because I just use the file menu.
     
    As for the freezing pointer it sounds like something in the background is spiking and messing things up or it could be what Craig suggested.

    Update your graphics card driver and run windows update. Check your mouse drivers as well... Avoid installing bloatware with mouse drivers. If that does not work you might want to update your motherboard BIOS (HP I think supplies an autoupdate application) and check Intel auto update:
