'funkified'
'funkified' http://www.soundclick.com...726&songID=9258824 'guitar' and 'bass' gear, the guitars were all my custom one-off Williams strat hybrid the bass is a Carvin LB70, thru a sansamp bass di. if i recall correctly, i think all the guitars were done thru a POD XT the sansamp and bass outputs were all run thru a A Designs Audio MP-1 mic pre, and into a ART DPS for conversion, into the roland via SPDIF the keys were a little Yamaha thing, an all-in-one synth deal, i lost in the great flood! LOL looked like this: i ran it into a marshall amp effect in the pod xt. drums were a drum machine, a little Zoom123.

A lot of your stuff, though very good, isn't my cup of tea. But this one is quite cool. Nice vibe going on and a good atmosphere. It's busy but not messy, or messy in a good way. Love the grindy bass, at least as it sounds on my smaller speakers in the bedroom. Dig up someone to do some really grooving real drums for it and it would go up another big notch I think.

Sweet and funky! Love the synth stuff in this. Guitar is very good as always. Excellent bass track, not just the sound but the playing as well. Damn fine production! Georgeous guitar. I love shinny pristine guitars, very pretty. Beautiful wood grain! I like beat up ones too, but only if they got that way through YEARS of life on the road (not off-the_Shelf "reliced" crap).

Excellent man really enjoyed it. Its kinda strange, very old meets new, almost sounds like music that would have been on an old megadrive game or similar. BTW I still listen to your album quite a bit man, its killer.

Very nice and funky! You have done an excellent job mixing, recording and performing. I like the way you build up and then bring it down at the end. There is only one chord pattern in this song though or maybe add more build up in the middle to change things up.

JANET thanks for gettin' funkified with me. droddy hey, that's a cool thing dean, checking stuff out that isn't something you would have sought out normally... i appreciate that. busy, yes, it was supposed to be kind of like watching a meteor shower out in the desert, just seeing stuff coming at you, and fading out, as new ones come into play... i prefer the more obvious electronic drum treatment, to an acoustic set... it kinda sets the mood more into an ambient kind of thing, which is what i was going for. rural meaty beaty big and bouncy! LOL thanks for listening.. daryl the synth, you know, i just had this keyboard hanging out, and i used to play keys a lot, but hadn't done anything with it for a while.. whenever i play keys, i tend to channel rick wrigh(floyd) for that kind of stuff... adji thanks man. new album out soon. studiocat hey phil! thanks for checking it out....... real drums, yeah, whaddaya do, drums?! heheh vechung thanks for commenting.... the one chord thing, yeah, i know what you mean. i was just trying to keep it spacey and navel-gazey, it sure wouldn't hurt to have at least ONE chord change!! LOL

I love the way you arranged all the guitar riffs here and there. Nice tasty use of delay and the liquidy feel is really cool. I would lean toward acoustic drums just so you can drop that low E string bass bomb down on a thick kick drum. Very subjective but I think that and one chord change would would give it more of a standalone song feel without killing the ambient vibe. It is a really dynamite soundscape though.

Absoflippinlutely cool song. Even on my cheap equipment this song jumped right out at me. Actually, I thing the drums kind of add a hip hop feel to a funkified song --- kind of blending old and new. Great bass sounds and nice guitar riffs. Your performance is terrific and the mix is stellar. Well done!!! Freddy J

Amazing textures and tones ... every instrument has its amazing coloration ... the bass, guitars, hats, etc. (though I miss your sweet vox in this one). Hey we all need a little funk to get things rolling in the winter drear-scape! The mix is astounding, topmost-shelf, and pure entertainement to my ears.

jamesyoyo THANKS for checking it out.... you know, i can hear what real drums would do to the piece, and i believe it would take it in the opposite direction of where i wanted to go with it. the whole idea, was to have the retro feel to it, with the psuedo hip hop kinda of fake drum vibe going on.... there was a reason i chose those sounds and wrote that particular groove. i tried to look beyond the obvious, for a choice that was not so obvious. paulo thanks man. i don't know if it'd work for a movie soundtrack, there are too many melodies and repeating motifs going on... maybe if i took one solid riff, and stripped everything else out, and repeated that a few times, it might work... but then, it wouldn't be a conversation any more! heheh albeit, a strange conversation, but a conversation all the same. the git player thanks man! only, it's not really a jam... everything was planned out to the last note. and if you really want you one, Getcha one! LOL scottytunes thanks s-jammer...... i thought about more chord changes, and on my very first demo, i had it where EVERY turn around was in a different key. it just didn't sit right. it wasn't until i thought about the idea of it being a hypnotic thing, with a lot of static all around the groove, that i finally got it right where i wanted it.

rhynosynth it took quite some time, to figure out the 'call and response' nature of the guitar parts. i had written a more involved melody, but when i tried it, it kinda watered the whole thing down. i wanted it to appeal to the more ADHD crowd......! LOL also, there's another element, which is invisible, and that is the fact that this song sits between 2 very busy instrumentals (this is going to be on an all instrumental release i'm working on........) it's partly written with the idea of breaking up these two other songs... the rhythm, the key sig, the way it's arranged, all works for that purpose.... but you're right, as a stand alone song, it would be stronger to make one good shift in the middle, then bring it back for the last section. i don't know, between yours and jamesyoyo, scotty's suggestions, i may revisit that changeup idea one more time. freddy J thanks man, glad you liked it....good that it translates on your system, that's what i'm trying to learn how to do, while mastering my own stuff. this one does get a complete remix tho, just so i can re-EQ everything before a final master session. lord knows, i'll mix these things half a dozen times before i commit to the one that will get mastered. philip appreciate the listen, philip. my favorite texture in this one, is the crappy little keyboard thru the pod xt marshall patch. LOL the guitars are spanky clean..... i tried to get those same types of tones thru my boogie last night, can't quite get there. it's more of a direct sound with the pod, of course.. i may try doing it with only my pedal board, and the Palmer Junction box. and here's some shots to help get rid of your 'winter drear-scape':

"it's partly written with the idea of breaking up these two other songs... the rhythm, the key sig, the way it's arranged, all works for that purpose.... " Perfect for that. Eric Johnson (among others) does that really good and I think it'll be excellent to give the record a nice flow. You also hear stuff like this as a middle break on old funk and soul tunes and sometimes with a sax playing with it. So many uses. I'm listening again and I really love that one phased guitar tone on that riffing. It's so soft and plush. What did you use for the effect?

studiocat maybe when i get this big push to finish these final mixes, i'll revisit this funkified tune, throw it your way and see where it lands.... good luck in europe! bring us back some good ale.... rhynosynth yes, he IS good at that! LOL ok guitar effects, this was all in the pod, to my ears now, it sounds like an auto wah. what makes it soft or 'plush', is the way you attack the strings on the pick strike... i draw the pick across quickly, but gently, so there's no real attack, or else the effect bites down on it quick, and sounds like the full-toe side of a wah pedal. this is more like a 'oooo-awwwww' effect.

yea baby, this is funky. Love the guitars especially that one rythm one with the chorus wah sound. What I think this need to finish it off, is some real drums to take that consistent artificial edge off the back beat and a few sparse catchy soul vocals to hook the listener. I like.
