I have the KRK V series and the KRK Rokit series, the for quality of sound and overall clairity, I prefer using the my KRK V series more so than the Rokit Series. I alternate between them when mixing, however.

For some dumb reason I never thought much of their so called deals. Ive check out a few items that were supposedly on sale and end up finding it at another store for either the same regular price or better. Now on the other hand their CME keyboard with the fire wire included is a great buy.

I have been using KRK rokit 5 monitors too and have been considerably happy so far. I am going to add a subwoofer for better bass response in a couple months. I did check also the 8" version and it goes lower than my 5" woofers, but I didn't have the space for them at the time.

Alesis M1 Active MK2 Monitors. Love em to death and they are only $300. To me these are the best monitors under $500 by far (from those I've experienced).

+1 on those Alesis monitors. Forget that they are Alesis - the company somehow screwed up and accidentally made some decent monitors. I have heard that they're being discontinued, though. I guess they caught their mistake and were worried these might alter their reputation.

P.S. If anybody in the Seattle area wants a pair of these, I have a recently-retired pair sitting here that needs a good home. I'll give a great deal to a deserving sonarite, but I won't ship them.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

In case anyone cares...Guitar Center told me they have run out of EMU PM5's. The steal deal is over.

So, I'm thinking JBL's at this point. How could I go wrong really? I like the LSR6325P's. But I'm thinking I want an 8" woofer. I figured going with a slightly bigger woofer, with more power, I really shouldn't need a sub for accurate mixing and still be able to enjoy the bass end more. Am I using faulty logic here?

Take a listen to the JBL's. They don't go uber low, but what you hear from the is real, in comparison to the hyped bottom end other companies put out. I think you'll find you really like how clean and detailed the LSR6325p's are, and you can always add a sub later if you do music that really needs it. Most people roll anything below 40 Hz off anyway, as it just gets muddy down there.

Also, I've noticed the reviews I've read on monitors so far, have preferred the smaller monitors over the bigger ones. Not by much, but they do seem to prefer them. Anyone know why that might be?

The crossover point between an 8" driver and a tweet is very difficult to get right. A smaller woofer makes designing the crossover easier, hence better sounding cabs with smaller, more accurate drivers.

I tend to find 8" woofers a bit woolly sounding to my ears, and there's a big gap where the midrange should be. YMMV, and a LOT of people like the Mackie 824's. Personally, I think the bottom end sounds like plastic, and they're a bit more forward than I'd like, due to over-compensation in the circuit to make up for the missing midrange. Like I say, a LOT of people like them though. Spendy... way out of your posted price range...

Come on over and take a listen to my JBL's! lol

Or, you can check out the mixes I've made with them on our site. Link below...

lazarous-

So what about 3-way JBL's? I wonder if this midrange problem you're describing with the larger woofer is resolved in that design, since the mids and lows aren't sharing a driver. What do you think? Ohhey and Yep have made it clear that the crossover designs are more complicated, but I wonder how that translates to accuracy.

I just don't hear much about 3-ways and we're way over the 400 dollar threshold in the title of this thread, but that's not my limitation.

I'm definitely taking my time on this now. It's too critical to be blowing money without being certain. And it looks like my room needs to be treated before I do anything anyway. Lots of reading and work to do...

I've heard good 3-ways and bad 3-ways. Personally, I like the JBL top end (it feels VERY accurate to me), but I've heard others describe it as being a little hot for their taste. Your best bet is going to be to head out and take a listen. If you can, buy from someplace that has a 30-day return policy.

DEFINITELY treat your room before you even THINK about buying monitors. I've done about as much as I can to my room, and have spent the last 3 years figuring it out. My mixes translate very well now. It took some getting used to though... it's a small room, and it's impossible to hear anything in there below about 45 hz or so.

Good luck! Feel free to drop me a line if I can help with anything else. There are lots of differing opinions when it comes to studio monitors. One person's nirvana is another bane. What works for me might drive you insane... but I have a number of engineers working in my studio, and they all really like the JBL's... enough so that one of them dumped his Tannoy Reveals to get a set, and another is seriously considering purchasing them to augment his current setup.
