hEY ALL YOU 64 BIT WIN 7 GURUS A QUESTION IT LIVES!!!!

EDIT : It finally Lives!!!! A new Barracuda 500g HD that I jumped to run at a lower data rate transfer did the trick! The install took 30 minutes.

All my HDs are back in and cards and peripherals, the new Win 7 driver feature is the cats meow.

A FEW ISSUES

1 problems with Liquid Mix 64 bit. I followed Focusrites tech bulletin and changed the FW card to Legacy drivers. The unit fires up, and the LM manager comes up, but I dont see it in my device manager..

2.Installing Dimension Pro goes so far and then just hangs, TM reports not responding.Somewhere during the libraries install is where it just says MEH.

3 This re-install VSTs things is a pain in the arse. I am still trying to wrap around the x86 / 64 bit thing. so far my UAD, Power Core and LM plugs appear to be 32 bit only.

My Tascam FW 1082 seems to be missing one midi driver FW1082 control on the out side to make it function as a control surface under 64 bit. I DID install the tascam sonar plug in .

4. I thought I could just copy my old DLLs from my XP install to the Win 7 x86 vst folder.
Some that are IlOK like antares, seem to be recognized. Some like Arturia Brass (iloked also) crash the cst scan, so I guess no cheating .

I know there is more activity and gentleness here than upstairs so I am poising my question here

Existing PC with XP32 and one audio HD one Library HD

Ordered new HD for the O/S and win 7 64 bit

Will do a clean install and start from scratch with X1 64 bit and all my VSTs and apps

now I think I read that one should create a separate folder for 32 bit VSts, is that the preferred method?

Should I point the 32 bit vsts to install in that folder?

Usually the 32 bit vsts try  to install into a steinberg default location, should I take the defaults?

thanks in advance

Yes, a W7 64bit install created a "Program Files" and a "Program Files (x86)" folder.

Just be sure when you're installing 32 bit app that the installer points to "Program Files (x86)". For me, most did, but some did not and I had to change it.

Many apps that are 64bit give you the option to install both. Again be careful to note which directory it points to. I did not use a steinberg directory when prompted.

I did a clean install of X1 on to Win 7 64bit on a new PC and had no major problems in that respect that I can remember apart from some minor tweaks - the install seemed to create all the necessary folders itself.  One problem I did get was that projects done on XP 32 with Dim Pro 32 couldn't find Dim Pro on the new PC as I loaded Dim Pro as 64 bit.  All I did was reload Dim Pro 64 into these projects as I had the projects still on the old computer to check settings - which is admittedly a long-winded way of solving the problem, for me it was OK but it may be a bigger deal for others.

Also I can't get Pentagon to open but that's a separate issue.

I don't know anything about a registry hack for default vst folder loctation, but I thought I'd add that DimPro is VERY picky about the installation.  make sure you don't install 1.2 BEFORE installing 1.5 that comes with X1.  and even then it might still be a bear to get installed correctly.

what kind of errors are you seeing?

I had a problem installing win7 initially because I was trying to install it on a new hard drive which I had attached to a new PCIe/SATA controller.  something about that controller wasn't working right and I took it out of the computer and connected the HD up to the motherboard's SATA ports (I had to disconnect a DVD drive - that's why I had bought the PCIe/SATA controller because I ran out of ports on the motherboard).

after I changed the setup to that configuration my win7 installation went smoothly.

    Re:hEY ALL YOU 64 BIT WIN 7 GURUS A QUESTION 2011/08/10 12:22:57 (permalink)
@Beagle, it just literally took 12 hours for the install, then when it initially tried to boot for the first time it advised me to do a repair, I did the "startup repair " option 3 times

first HD from new egg bad out of the box, I then grabbed a 1Tb I was using for Acronis BU

then repaired the MBR  then it got to the  starting windows screen

windows was just  taking forever to display the cube , after 15 minutes I cut it off and tried to do a reinstall, it found the HD and its size, etc  but said it could not install windows there, could not format it either.

Bios  would see the drive one time and one time not.
Now this is a PC that had a perfect functioning XP install so I am going to try a new HD.both HDs were WD Greens ,

That exact same thing happened to me. It ended up being a bad stick of RAM right out of the box.

If you hold F8 (IIRC) when you first turn your PC on, it will go in to a diagnostics mode and you can test your RAM there. It found bad RAM in less than 3 minutes on my system.

I eventually did get Windows 7 installed with the bad RAM and everything ran fine except for Sonar.

Update: The other thing, it's a nightmare to do a true format of your HDD once Windows 7 has started an installation, at least it was in my situation. It creates hidden partitions that kind of take over your HDD. I ended up using an HDD utility because at first I thought I corrupted something because I powered down after an hour of it being frozen.

    Re:hEY ALL YOU 64 BIT WIN 7 GURUS A QUESTION 2011/08/10 15:27:49 (permalink)
    FWIW

studio computer (32bit win 7): I keep all my plug ins in a folder I created in my OS hardisk named "VST".

laptop (for live performance etc, 64bit win 7): two folders, one named VST 32 and one named VST 64.

As for the registry hack and what exactly this means is that whatever plug in you installed in your system first, it might have written a default key in your registry of where the VST plug ins might be located in your computer. For many, the path Steinberg/VST is the case. In every plug in you install in the future, the where to install dialogue defaults to that location. To change that default location you need to edit a registry key:

How to set default VST folder setting!!!!

    1. run regedit

    2. go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE

    3. create a key VST (or locate the existing one)

    4.open VST

    5. create a string value, into VST, with value name VSTPluginsPath and Value Data, the directory you wan to set default for vsts (or obviously edit the exisitng one's path)

"If you want to improve the vibe here, go away."

    Hi mm100,

Two things that you've probably done already--but I'll remind you anyway.

Keep an eye on which SATA/PATA interface is being used in BIOS.  Occasionally, BIOS will try to use the first interface available.  You seem to further on than worrying about which HD you're booting from, but you may want to verify in BIOS that it's using the drives in the order you want them to be used.

I also imagine you're ahead of me on this--make sure you're logged in as Administrator to install Dimension.  I had quite a time installing 8.5 because of that.  I don't know if it makes a difference in X1.

    Good luck,

Personally I disabled UAC as soon as win7 came up for the first time.  I can't stand UAC.  IMO it's for morons people who don't know anything about a computer to attempt to keep them from screwing it up as badly as they have in the past with winxp.

I like my Mac much better though. I just can't seem to find the right software to fit the way I work! And no one better say Parallels or Fusion!
