I'm a bit partial to Garbanzo's....stirfried with onions, chili flakes, salt pepper, and lots of mustard seeds....great snack and goes really well with beer.

I wonder. Does Mrs. Mesh agree (around two hours later)?

I doubt The CHB will write a song about that.

Well, I'm no song writer by any means, but Garbanzo, Bozo, Yoko, & Oh No all have something in common.....no?

Reese- It is interesting that a lot of people who end up in management never aspired to it in the beginning. I have been a foreman and a salesman and I wasn't really good at either one IMO. I never set out to be either one originally and so I'm back to square one as a tech.

Generally if you get that queasy feeling in your gut( Mesh I'm not referring to eating beans) when you think about doing it, this is that square peg feeling going into a round hole.If the thought of it excites you then maybe we have a winner.

For real fun try managing a group of people who volunteer. I still do this.

Yeah, unfortunately, I'm on neither end of the spectrum about it.  it doesn't make me sick to my stomach to think about moving to management, but it doesn't get me excited, either.

this is typical for most "church goers" - yes, I've been there, done that, got the t-shirt and a lot of other things I didn't order.

Reece, I made that jump in the last job I had.

I came on board the company as a plant electrician and worked in the maint shop on the electrical and computer systems to keep the machinery running. It also included refits and new installs of new equipment. I was considered to be hourly... punch the clock.  I loved the work and did my job exceedingly well.

About 2 years maybe close to 3 years in, I was approached by the boss a few levels up... "come to my office with me" sort of thing. I was offered a job as a supervisor over 45 people and a substantial raise plus "staff benefits and perks".  I told him I really liked my job but I would consider it.

Several days later I mouthed off (cussed him out good) at my fellow worker who had just been made my  immediate supervisor and told him basically where he could go and what he could do when he got there..... he was feeling the oats of his new job title so he wrote me up.  So I found myself back in an office with the guy who was the boss of the guy who offered me the promotion......

He says..... we have a problem here... or more correctly, YOU have a choice to make. Do you want to take the promotion today that we offered you last week, or do you want to be fired for insubordination today?  Uhhhhh ..... let me think that one through...... I took the job promotion and they spun the story that it was a misunderstanding between friends.....

So I ended up as a shift supervisor over 45 people. All of them heard the story, and thought I should have been fired, not promoted.  Talk about trying to earn respect..... the only thing going for me was that I had cussed the guy out... most everyone disliked him to one degree or another.  But I knew little to nothing about the actual work they did, but I did know the machines.

One guy even came to me a few weeks later and told me to my face that he thought he should be setting in the chair that I was setting in and that I should have been fired.....BUT...... he hated the guy I cussed out even more than I did.... and therefore, he told me he was going to teach me everything I needed to know to succeed in that job. Which he did.

I learned the job and excelled at it.  So a year later I came back to work after my 3 days off...( I worked 3 on 3 off 12/12)  ...... and I went to see the same guy who gave me the ultimatum a year earlier (staff yearly review) I was expecting a pat on the back and a decent raise..... and he says come in, close the door, set down.......... you're fired. It seems that the people who didn't like me but saw how well I was doing in the supervisor job were a bit fearful for their jobs.... they saw me as a threat. It had taken me less than 3 years to get to the level it took them over 8 to achieve...... so unknown to me they were politicking to get me gone.

It was at that time that I realized I didn't really get along well with people who were stupider than me but somehow were my bosses...... so I decided to chunk the whole corporate thing and be my own boss.

All that to say, think it through. If your current position is a good one that you like and there are not going to be repercussions if you stay there...... don't jump. There is a lot to be said for working at a job that you know and enjoy. If you think you might enjoy something different, and if it comes with better pay and perks, give it some thought. If you do, simply ask if there could be a revision period, say 3 to 6 months where, if you didn't like the new position or felt you were not right for that job, you could return to your current position. It never hurts to ask and get the cards on the table.

I actually did like the supervisory job pretty well.  But even though I was fired for political reasons, it all worked out well in the end because I started a business and put the energy into it that I brought to the factory jobs and made it a success.

Pray about it.

Re:have any of you ever moved from a technical job to a management job? 2012/06/19 09:31:56 (permalink)
Hi,

I had been an assistant in a couple of Restaurants (Carrows in California) and when the time came ... I took the next step. I never regretted it.

It was not that big a deal managing people, but it was a bit of learning, having to do some things that you were supposed to do and such ... but it was not a big deal. All in all it was very good, despite the fact that I was working 80 hours weekly easy ... and had no social life whatsoever.  I left the restaurant business 6 years later, because the majority of folks I was working with at the time, were a bunch of liars, thieves, and backstabbers. I just was not enjoying being around that much scum in my life! Easy decision, even though it meant I had to scrape and scrap for the next 10 years to be able to get a decent job and situation ... when you are in transition and not sure what/who/where and what not.

All in all, I have some nice memories, and I can tell you from my heart that I did not abuse the priviledge or take advantage of the employees. I may have been a bit tough, but I was fair and had the smallest percentage of turnover for 5 years going ... which tells you that I put a lot of faith and trust in the folks I had. I have NEVER gained anything from this at all ... in any job, board, location or life. I have always thought that was the side of me that cared and helped the best he could ... and that some people forget that the day has 24 hours ... and that we're still together!

Will you be happy doing this or that? ... neither here nor there, because you will be too busy to consider it.

But if you are an independet as a musician, for example, I imagine that as a manager you might not do too well, specially when you expect people to do something that you knew you could do better! I had that problem for a while, as one of the main reasons I became a manager? ... I knew all the jobs better than anyone else ... and in the end ... it showed ... over 6 years, I averaged over 95% results with health inspectors and when I left the equipment was perfect as opposed to when I came in ... when it was all broken! Ohhh ... in Vancouver, when I came to it, we had 245 seats and 180 forks only! ... no kidding!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!

Nice ... it was the same for me.

The main issue at my current place, is that I simply do not have the health standard anymore to be able to take up the higher placement. My eyesight is bad enough, that sometimes I do not even register a part of an email, for example, and miss out on a detail here and there sooner or later ... and basically, in any kind of management, you need to learn to get better and cut that down to almost nothing.

In many ways, I always felt I was better suited for the higher job, based on aesthetics, and desire to do a better job ... but too many folks around me, in the restaurant were there to pick up the girls ... not to manage! But it was Santa Barbara, California in the 70's and 80's ... and it was always about a "score" ... never/ever about your ability! Reaganomics it was called!

As a wise Guy once stated from his holy chapala ... none of the hits, none of the time ... prevents you from becoming just another turkey in the middle of all the other turkeys!
