help me combine audio with midi

When combining audio with midi tracks, is it best to convert your MIDI tracks to audio, then add your audio? If you do not do it this way would there be a latency problem? Thanks for any help rendered!

Let's make this simple, assuming you have a midi drum track made, and are using Microsoft synth GS.

    1. open a new AUDIO track

    2. arm the AUDIO track (click the litle red R in the track view)

    3. hit the red dot on the transport bar Waa Laa a new audio drum track.

If using Edirol VSC or any softsynth instead of Microsoft synth GS

    1. open a new AUDIO track

    2. Find the FX box and right click, chose DXi synths, and click on Edirol VSC

    3. Go back to the midi track and select edirol VSC as the output

    4. Go to EDIT and click Bounce to Tracks(s)

I think there would be much less noticable latency if you leave the MIDI as MIDI, since it is a computer instruction which takes up/uses much fewer processing resources than audio does. I always leave my MIDI alone. If you want to make an MP3 to email to someone, or a CD you can give to your friends, that would be a reason to audioize the MIDI, but I can do it without converting it to audio in the computer, so I leave it alone. True, since since one can just do a mixdown to a stereo audio file and export that, then leave the file as midi. However if one is using midi thru several softsynths then audio can actually be an easier file to process, taking up less resources. I was running a drum VSTi on one project and after recording the drum VSTi output to an audio track and deleting the VSTi and midi track i save about 15% on the CPU. All Audio tracks are hitting about 35% where with three or foue synths and VSTi instruments i was hitting about 50% with 6 audio tracks added and seeral effects. It kind of has the same effects as freezing a midi synth track

I did not know that. I haven't used VSTs at all, still a hardware guy, really. I sometimes play with Edirol, but I haven't utilized it in a work. In fact, lately I've spent more time reading the forum than actually using MC. The muse flew out the window, and since it's not my job, I'll wait for her to come back. Say, Rob, do you know of a Hammond B3 or C3 organ program? Greg

I have several Organs VSti that i like, My MTS program comes with a wheel organ that i used in a couple songs, i also have about three B-3 sound fonts i really like one in particular. Sampletank free 1 has a nice B-3 patch.. A good organ can make a song sometimes.

Hardware is the way to go if one can afford a good Keyboard or rack synth. I would love to get a Korg rack mount this year sometimes. I know a guy on another board that claims he made a great rack like synth out of an old computer he had laying around, by linkng it to his DAW, and putting an old Sound blaster in it and loading a professional GM set of sound fonts in the SB and it makes a almost zero latency synth. Kind of like when folks run Gigasampler on a second box and stream from that.
