help please, re: change in midi interface / missing port

Dear all, any advice please?

I have changed my usb MIDI interface.

In the past (probably in the pre-X days, can't remember as it's a long time since I've changed my midi usb interface), as long as I kept the order of the outputs correct, e.g. first port = keyboard, second port = synth1, 3rd port = synth2, etc then the old projects would work just fine.

Now with Sonar Platinum, after having changed my MIDI interface, when I open a project it tries to find the previous MIDI interface ports (and obviously cannot).

And so it looks like I would have to "reassign missing midi devices" each time I open a recent project (I think probably from the sonar X days, or at least from cwp file version 19.something).  However if I were to open an ancient project (e.g. cwp file version 15.something or older), it seems to be fine.

Is there any way for Sonar to disregard the actual midi device, but just go with the order of the ports like it used to do many years ago?

Thanks,
WeiLiang

PS:  relevant system info: Windows 8.1 (64bit), Sonar Platinum, motu micro express (usb midi interface), (previous midi interface was edirol um3ex)

Hi WeiLang. Unfortunately I don't think that there is a way to have Sonar ignore the hardware change, If there is I would love to hear about it! This is a problem I too have run into many times. I am not sure when it changed - its been a while. It may even be something that changed in windows rather than Sonar. Even more frustrating is that when you plug a usb midi interface into a different usb port, windows will occasionally recognise it as a different device and Sonar sees it as a new port!

I switch between hardware quite a bit so I now back up my audio and midi output assigments. It has saved me a lot of time. In case you are interested they are stored in the following files:

    AUD.INI and TTSEQ.INI
    located in:
    C:\Users\<yourname>\App Data\Roaming\Cakewalk\SONAR Platinum

    Best of luck:)

    Bruce.

sigh.  maybe I'll put this on the 'features' forum, and hope that there eventually appears an option to find midi ports by absolute device, or by port number.  Thanks for the link to the TTSEQ file - at first I thought maybe I spelled the 'friendly names' wrong, but checking there I used exactly the same spelling.

Sigh inded:) If it was possible, assigning midi output solely by order regardless of hardware attached would be a great feature request. FWIW the friendly names make no difference at all to port assignments so it wouldn't matter if you misspelled them. They are local to the machine you put them on.
